In an effort to get my horn system 'just right' pending next weekend's gathering (see bake Off thread) I have been tweaking away like a freshman bitten with the hifi bug.
There's been a nod to room treatment even!
With 14 items that plug in to the mains, 5 amps, and various bits of kit supported by subwoofers there's plenty of scope for a bit of lateral thinking, or even straightahead thinking.
I was playing some 12" 45s and noticing a bit of 'spit' in places. Humm, not keen on that I'm thinking. My first thought was that the SS Ayre phono stage was overloading (valve phono stages are said to have greater headroom), but before I threw the baby out with the bathwater, I decided to change the loading on the MC cartridge - an Art 9 from Audio Technica (hi output low output version).
The Ayre P-5xe has only 100 ohms and 1000 ohms (disregarding the 47Kohms mm option) so tonight I moved it to 1000 ohms and tried it out. Bingo! The whiff of mistracking type effect has gone and we are smooth as a smooth thing.
(I had 'done the forums' and found around 500 ohms recommended.., so I had some info to go on.)
Its not rocket science and it was easy with the Ayre as the DIP switches were external.
Worth a play, if you have an Art 9 - and a few of us do..
