Hi gang, I'm looking for a car that's nice to drive and won't cost a lot to run nor waste a lot of my time getting it repaired. don't do much motorway but do do lots of driving on little country roads. nothing too posh as it's needed for hauling scruffy dog, muddy bike, rotted manure, rubbish, and me. I am never ever going to buy a German car, so anything VW or VW-connected is a non-starter, but a 1.4 petrol Golf mk VI would otherwise be pretty close to perfect for me. Budget around £15k. Any ideas? Cheers.

Given the carrying requirements, perhaps something bigger than a Fiesta sized car.Not German ? Well how about a Peogeot 3008 or if it's not too big, the 5008. Versatile, nice to drive etc. If you'd consider a 5008, then why not also look at the Ford S-Max - fabulous car.
Maybe. Golf Mk6 boot capacity: 1305 litres, Fiesta: 960 litres.

Focus.

Hate the ratted things personally, but they drive really well, are cheap to fix, look reasonable and are almost tardis-like in their ability to swallow heaps of stuff.

hey gang, thanks for the ideas. Can't really see myself in a people carrier type car. The Fiesta looks like it would be a blast but it's a tad too small and a bit too boy racer for this middle-aged driver. I rented a Focus for a week in France last year. Very pleasant to drive but I found the controls endlessly confusing and annoying. Too much silly gadgetry and poor layout of the controls I thought. Also drove a 308 for a few days recently, and didn't really get on with the seats, otherwise another nice little car to drive with the right amount of space for my needs. Any thoughts about the new Mazda 3?

Have to test drive a Kia. Need to work on those model names, and what were they thinking with that grill? Hope they're less soporific to drive than a Toyota Prius.

1.4 Honda Civic. 15K should buy you a very good low milage one.

Over 40mpg, totally reliable, large space in the back, it’s size is very deceptive.

Very good handling, suits country lanes or town driving. No brainer:).
