Hi!

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/lowther-TP1A-PM3-Best-Sound-/290941859445

They look brilliantly constructed. I had been thinking of constructing a run of 10 pairs but someone's beaten me to it. The plans are 90 pages long and these must be one of the most complex designs ever built.

I have compared the TP1A with the modern TP1 and the sound is extraordinarily similar. Very much top rate, although when testing the modified full range units I make from time to time in an Acousta and a TP1A in an A-B comparison, one does wonder whether there is £XXXX difference in the sound.

The great thing about the TP1A is that it's something that people don't recognise as being a speaker. It's a strange shaped piece of furniture that does't scream hi-fi.

In the TP1A, however, I prefer the PM5 to the PM2 version of the PM3: the treble is better.

Best wishes

Have you ever heard the Hegermans David?
:) No - but I have heard the Audiovector and, possibly not positioned correctly, wondered what all the fuss was about about those. But TP1s are incomparable. I use them with extra bass boost on the amplifier and this makes them quite flat and punchy too . . .

The audiovector horn is too short but the TP1 is well designed.

Best wishes

I've just seen the responses on this thread: the suspicion expressed by the members above was and is inappropriate. The advertisement was not mine and I had no interest in posting here other than as an enthusiast with over 45 years knowledge of Lowthers and providing information for other enthusiasts.

Eight years ago? That's one hell of a bit of grudge holding 🤣

Haha. I'd only just seen the continuation of the thread on account of looking for current values of TP1s hiring out my pair which I've just refurbished

in order to set an insurance value for them. Even if long ago reading the comments are wholly insulting. Internet threads by their nature last a long time and the presence of the posts above expose mindsets of people then involved. Clearly they weren't to know that I'm one of the few people around with TP1A, TP1B, Pair of TP1 Londons, Pair of Audiovectors, Pairs of Acoustas, Dual position acoustas, Prophecy Audio prototypes, experience of Lowther drivers in different enclosures and often advise people on the use of different drive units in different contexts together with having done frequency response measurements.

Many people seem to think that Lowther drivers can be idiosyncratic but that is often on account of people using the wrong drivers in the wrong enclosures.

DX2 in 500 and 150 Hz horns.JPG

The green line will be of surprise to many, as even it is to me. This is using a 500hz horn of the TP1 London rather than the 150hz horn of the TP1 Imperator from which the Prophecy horn was derived.

Most people would use a DX4 in TP1s and Oris horns but forwards facing the DX2 unit is arguably the best unit to use. Possibly PM6 A or C and indeed the PM6C is underrated. The stronger magnets of PM7, PM2, PM4, PM5 and DX3 and DX4 are required where the units are either facing upwards or facing to bounce backwards off a wall.

There appear to be new production, nothing to do with me, of the 1950s TP1A in South Korea https://www.ebay.com/itm/254543483253. When starting this thread a long time ago I'd just received a copy of the plans. They ran to over 90 pages and these must be one of the most complex speaker constructions ever designed.

Best wishes

David P
