I am tentatively interested in this unit due to their fame in FM. I have no interest in FM or it’s streaming capabilities it’s just the internet radio side.

Is there any reason to consider this as I already have an Auralic Altair G1. Is there a big difference between internet radio devices? I don’t think that the Auralic Altair G1 radio is that great but I don’t know if it’s internet radio at fault in general or if it’s the Auralic. Does the Magnum Dynalab reign reign supreme in the land of internet radio?

Thanks

I do think internet radio tends to be compressed/MP3 quality streams. Will stand corrected if that's not always the case. On a par with DAB in SQ terms I tend to find.

The question is about whether the Magnum will be a better source than the Auralic. Given that different streamers are different playing the same source then maybe the same is true of internet radio. I have three streamers and they sound very different to each other. None are great at internet radio. But internet radio is an important source for me. Is the Magnum going to do a better job?

My point is that there's a limit on how good an internet radio stream can sound so when you reach that there's no point in upgrading further. The one caveat is that some gear can make lower res music sound better if it's not the most detailed of components. There are also settings I've seen to improve the sound of low res music. I don't know if the Dynalab has any of this. Have you played with the DSP/filters on the Aurilic, different ones might sound better go low res vs normal/hi?

Ultimately I don't know how the Dynalab sounds so maybe someone who owned one can chime in.

I ould normally say "get a pi", but I see you have the posh version.

Save your money, all it offers is a different sound, maybe ?

I thought about it myself, but decided, NO !. LMS offers better, and DAB+ can surely be found cheaper o_O

Point for the record, not all internet radio streams are low bitrate mp3. The most obvious example that springs to mind, and one that's popular here, is Radio Paradise. Four different streams (for different "flavours" of music available in higher quality - I think it might vary form device to device but certainly on Sonos I use the FLAC streams which sound really very good indeed. No reason to assume that IR is necessarily any worse than FM, where the vast majority of stations I'm aware of compress the life out of the music.

With IR it can be a bit of a hit & miss exercise finding the good ones but it's worth the effort. I would imagine that different devices will be able to make the most of those streams that are on offer
