Mrs e has trashed my Benz wood , and of course it's all my fault for buying ridiculously fragile things that are expensive and putting them where she might just

go past ............. silly me .

Looking at my cantileverless cart I was thinging is this MC lark worth it , sure they sound lovely but they ware out ( if your lucky ) and you have to start again .

Rep tips seem to be a contentious area , if I my cart wasn't wrecked would a retip by anyone other than Benz give me a different cart ? .

Maybe MM's with repaceable stylus's are the way forward ........... closely followed by a divorce .

Ggrrrr .

or

learn to dust by yourself.

Men can do this, although I admit that yellow is a crap colour for a duster. Should be a sort of beige or steely grey IMO.

MM's are for people who live in cardboard boxes and drink meths.

Mrs Mac trashed an Ortofon MC some years ago. She took more care in the vicinity of the replacement, but she won't go within three feet of the current nail :nup:

No-one mentioned dusting Rocky - this sounded like a 'walk-by-assault'

I am fortunately very careful so haven't had any mishaps, but not everyone is well co-ordinated and accidents happen, which is why when not in use, the arm on my deck is always sat with the guard so it cannot be knocked across.

Yes, I always have the stylus guard fitted when not in use.

Is Mrs E aware of the enormity of her clumsiness?

Spot on Sam , there was no duster involved .

Mrs e walks past whilst on the phone chatting to her sister , goes to open the window at the same time and knocks the arm of it's rest .

Who say's multi tasking is good ? .

Of course she is now feeling so guilty that I'm being exceptionally well treated at the moment , now where's that little bell ............ my beer's getting low .

sigh

we need a new emoticon for being facetious/silly/just joshing/being lighthearted.

well anyway, now that I know the exact circumstances of the demise, I can start a file on the incident, although, for clarity, I'd apperciate the exact time, a note of who was present in the house and their ages...............

and another emoticon to denote sarcasm when desperate.

maybe

This......+ 1

This is wot I do too & the arm is always returned to its clip when not in use. I guess my TT on its wall shelf is also located at a height & location that would make the likelihood of someone causing damage by simply walking past or standing near it extremely unlikely, as it can only be passed from t' front. :^ I do also have a full cover for it for additional belt 'n braces protection.

Touch wood.....but I've never managed to damage an M.C. cart yet but have pranged several M.M. cantilevers in the past....mebbe I have more inherent respect for 'em :dunno: .

I did have one near miss several years back, where I caught the canti of an OC9ml ii rather hard whilst fiddling:roll:......(prolly fer no particular good reason:doh: :D ) It did seem to move a fair old bit to the right but sprang back into place & subsequently wasn't out of alignment in any plane....I presume I was really lucky & any movement was within the suspensions range of compliance despite any movement seeming fairly severe at the time. :dunno:

However in recollection it seems to me that my several broken canti's on mm carts that I seem to recall if anything less force was required to cause the damage so wonder whether there's any case for suggesting that mm cart assemblies could perhaps be more fragile in some regards than fixed canti carts??

I'm not sure that I buy into the idea that replaceable stylus carts are any better in terms of replacement costs than fixed stylus mc's either. Not if you're discussing carts that are at least on the same page in terms of SQ, as replacement stylus costs are little different to that of the whole cart in most cases. A fair few cart mfrs offer exchange schemes that are far more favorable than this IME.

Given how trivially easy it is to set a cart up for most peeps, replaceable styli don't seem a big advantage to me:nup:. If you have the benefit of a removable H/Shell arm, investing in a couple of spare shells + carts is a smart move IMV & in the case of a prang you can be up & running again well inside 5 minutes:cool:. TBH not having at least one spare is pretty short sighted as feckups can always happen!! Even if you have a fixed H/Shell arm a spare cart is always good & there's never any harm having more than this.

don't know about wood but most of the BM cartridges i've seen come without a stylus guard. i improvised something around mine to prevent it from the worst but still it's really silly. however most of the expensive ones are like that.

I am talking about the guard that prevents the arm being knocked across.

Fortunatly the arm I use looks after this automatically as return to rest puts the lock on. You press the lock down to disengage when you move the arm.

Well I'm glad you think so! For me, it's a feckin' ball-ache, easily the biggest source of stress, frustration and uncertainty I can think of in hi-fi terms. I hate doing it, and I always end up paranoid that I've got something massively wrong, and am damaging my lovely, irreplaceable records. Perhaps you'd care to share with me your techniques, because believe me, I could really use the help.... :(

I have my vinyl systems in rooms where only I enter unless by prior engagement. This sounds controlling, but in practice my wife and family have no real interest in going in my 'music room' and the attic - if they want to listen to music they use the CD/SBT system which is much safer.

I think they are glad to be rid of me for a bit when I disappear off - and it keeps the cartridges safer than they would be!

Shropshire Borders,
MC carts are better for wusses who only like breathy female vocalists and dirty folkies, and don't like to rock.
Fixt :p

Saying that, I trashed my Clearaudio MM while trying to put the stylus cover on after a drop too many of the old Bruichladdich. And insurance paid - the conversation went something like this:

Me: I'd like to make a claim for accidental damage

Insurance Person: And what is the claim for?

Me: Accidental damage to the stylus on a record player

IP: And how much is the claim for?

Me: £395

IP: So the claim is for damage to a stereo system?

Me: No, just the needle on a record player

IP: @**&$%!!!!!
