No-one mentioned dusting Rocky - this sounded like a 'walk-by-assault'I am fortunately very careful so haven't had any mishaps, but not everyone is well co-ordinated and accidents happen, which is why when not in use, the arm on my deck is always sat with the guard so it cannot be knocked across.
This......+ 1
This is wot I do too & the arm is always returned to its clip when not in use. I guess my TT on its wall shelf is also located at a height & location that would make the likelihood of someone causing damage by simply walking past or standing near it extremely unlikely, as it can only be passed from t' front. :^ I do also have a full cover for it for additional belt 'n braces protection.
Touch wood.....but I've never managed to damage an M.C. cart yet but have pranged several M.M. cantilevers in the past....mebbe I have more inherent respect for 'em :dunno: .
I did have one near miss several years back, where I caught the canti of an OC9ml ii rather hard whilst fiddling:roll:......(prolly fer no particular good reason:doh:

) It did seem to move a fair old bit to the right but sprang back into place & subsequently wasn't out of alignment in any plane....I presume I was really lucky & any movement was within the suspensions range of compliance despite any movement seeming fairly severe at the time. :dunno:
However in recollection it seems to me that my several broken canti's on mm carts that I seem to recall if anything less force was required to cause the damage so wonder whether there's any case for suggesting that mm cart assemblies could perhaps be more fragile in some regards than fixed canti carts??
I'm not sure that I buy into the idea that replaceable stylus carts are any better in terms of replacement costs than fixed stylus mc's either. Not if you're discussing carts that are at least on the same page in terms of SQ, as replacement stylus costs are little different to that of the whole cart in most cases. A fair few cart mfrs offer exchange schemes that are far more favorable than this IME.
Given how trivially easy it is to set a cart up for most peeps, replaceable styli don't seem a big advantage to me:nup:. If you have the benefit of a removable H/Shell arm, investing in a couple of spare shells + carts is a smart move IMV & in the case of a prang you can be up & running again well inside 5 minutes

. TBH not having at least one spare is pretty short sighted as feckups can always happen!! Even if you have a fixed H/Shell arm a spare cart is always good & there's never any harm having more than this.
