I have heard good things about the RFC-MC1, new they are around £500 so 2nd hand should be within your budget - they are rare 2nd hand though.

The Icon Audio SUT is around £300 new aren't they?

The RFC is not DIY btw, it's built by reffc (reference fidelity components). How about the Pure Sound one, they used to be around £300 new?

I have a definitive audio mc step up earlier version. Works really well with my Dynavector xx2 cartridge the equal of the allnic 1201 internal step up transformers. Cost £270.

+1 I use the RFC-MC1 SUT with a Benz Glider SL and an Icon PS1.2 Sig stage - the combination is excellent. Good choice of SUT with the Benz cart IMO.

Thanks fellas, this is really helpful. | audiojoy / davedwack - PM sent. | andreweast - I don't know whether a SUT is a good idea ... I don't know anything about valves and am trying to muddle my way through | ... anything else out there?

Have a good Cinemag SUT that may well be up for sale in a two to three weeks, depending on an imminent arrival and some comparisons.

Uses CMQEE-3440A (some very good reviews about using these transformers).

Will be well within your budget.

Ideally, I would be looking at SUTs with a ratio of 1:15, but 1:20, should be Ok. I found 1:10, does not suit Benzs. If you are not bothered by looks, by used, at £300, you should get something pretty decent, especially if you look overseas.

on contrary, 1:10 is the perfect ratio for ACE SL - it has a healthy 0.4mV output so it would feed a RIAA preamp with 4mV, whereas a standard for most of the branded (non DIY) phono preamps is 2.5 mV so some preamps will react to being fed with 3-4 times more input than what they are designed for...

i'm not writing this theoretically, i had this exact cartridge and used it with a S&B SUT 1:10 ratio (40ohm input impedance), the combination punched way about its cost. i tried many other SUTs with different ratios, from 1:6 to 1:20, actually the lesser ratio caused less issues that a higher one (as they may come too close to the impedance of the cartridge) - i had different phono preamps with this combo, from EAR 834p to Welborne Labs, pretty much the same with any.

my 2 cents.

interesting I use EAR834p but did drop in a lower gain output valve as the pre was getting a bit upset, I also have in line switchable attenuators and it all seems to potter along very nicely
