Another email from JR (I posted the previous one a while ago). He's a good bloke and they're a great company to deal with.
Dear Lawrence,
Times are really tough. So many are struggling with the effects of rampant inflation and two out of five of us are having to cut down on our food spending, never mind having spare cash for luxuries.
We will continue to do our best, along with our wonderful colleagues, to run our business in a responsible way. By this, I mean treating our stakeholders with respect, starting with you, our valued customers who pay our wages; our brilliant colleagues who try so hard to serve you well; paying the suppliers on time who fuel our business with their lovely goodies; and ensuring our subcontracted drivers and cleaners aren’t forgotten about - we insist they are paid at least the Real Living Wage.
Despite our profits being significantly affected this year by rising costs, we have pledged to give above-average pay rises, which admittedly are still struggling to keep up with anticipated inflation. When the chips are down, this is more important than ever. While things are tougher, we hope to be ok, but it will be even harder for others, I am sure. And I genuinely believe that being an employee-owned business does make a positive difference.
So, we will continue to give 15% of our profits to worthy causes, including to the seven national charities we have founded, as well as to the newly created Richer Sounds Foundation, which is run by my colleagues. The challenge is deciding who to give this relatively small amount to, with the need being so great.
Many will be feeling the pinch, so I've asked our small buying team to come up with what we call ‘inflation-busting megadeals’, at literally minuscule or no profit to us, to hopefully give our customers a treat in these lean times (look out for the Panasonic 50” TV with a six-year guarantee included at £249).
We also hope to serve those who are fortunate enough to be able to still consider major projects with a premium custom install service that is second to none. We are really proud of our work and expertise in this area, so do ask us for a quote and we won’t be beaten on price.
Finally, I am of the firm belief that a lot of the current problems won’t go away quickly and, if we intend to survive, we must strive to continually improve everything we do, so please don’t think we don’t care! Please keep writing to me if what we do doesn’t meet with your approval, and it makes my day to hear when things have gone well.
Before I sign off, I must not forget to thank the many Which? Consumers Association members for voting us the best retailer in the land again (of any kind), for the seventh time.
We will continue to serve you to the best of our ability, and, rest assured, your support is much appreciated and will never be taken for granted.
With best wishes,
Julian Richer,
