Another email from JR (I posted the previous one a while ago). He's a good bloke and they're a great company to deal with.

Dear Lawrence,

Times are really tough. So many are struggling with the effects of rampant inflation and two out of five of us are having to cut down on our food spending, never mind having spare cash for luxuries.

We will continue to do our best, along with our wonderful colleagues, to run our business in a responsible way. By this, I mean treating our stakeholders with respect, starting with you, our valued customers who pay our wages; our brilliant colleagues who try so hard to serve you well; paying the suppliers on time who fuel our business with their lovely goodies; and ensuring our subcontracted drivers and cleaners aren’t forgotten about - we insist they are paid at least the Real Living Wage.

Despite our profits being significantly affected this year by rising costs, we have pledged to give above-average pay rises, which admittedly are still struggling to keep up with anticipated inflation. When the chips are down, this is more important than ever. While things are tougher, we hope to be ok, but it will be even harder for others, I am sure. And I genuinely believe that being an employee-owned business does make a positive difference.

So, we will continue to give 15% of our profits to worthy causes, including to the seven national charities we have founded, as well as to the newly created Richer Sounds Foundation, which is run by my colleagues. The challenge is deciding who to give this relatively small amount to, with the need being so great.

Many will be feeling the pinch, so I've asked our small buying team to come up with what we call ‘inflation-busting megadeals’, at literally minuscule or no profit to us, to hopefully give our customers a treat in these lean times (look out for the Panasonic 50” TV with a six-year guarantee included at £249).

We also hope to serve those who are fortunate enough to be able to still consider major projects with a premium custom install service that is second to none. We are really proud of our work and expertise in this area, so do ask us for a quote and we won’t be beaten on price.

Finally, I am of the firm belief that a lot of the current problems won’t go away quickly and, if we intend to survive, we must strive to continually improve everything we do, so please don’t think we don’t care! Please keep writing to me if what we do doesn’t meet with your approval, and it makes my day to hear when things have gone well.

Before I sign off, I must not forget to thank the many Which? Consumers Association members for voting us the best retailer in the land again (of any kind), for the seventh time.

We will continue to serve you to the best of our ability, and, rest assured, your support is much appreciated and will never be taken for granted.

With best wishes,

Julian Richer,

Yep, had that but still inexcusable for them to increase prices prior to a sale. I was watching a Bluetooth speaker on price runner for the Black Friday sale and sent the evidence to them and still await the conclusion. If I had more time, I’d pursue it more.
It was dearer on Black Friday than two months earlier and was cheaper two weeks after it.

Got my TV from Richer Sounds, too. They were great to deal with - the first TV I got from them wasn't to my liking, and they arranged a return/collection without even charging me postage. For my current TV, they pricematched a steep end-of-line discount at Costco even when their own stock was low (and seemed to be moving quickly at a significantly higher price).

I've never had a bad experience with them and I have bought a fair bit of kit from them over the years. They're a good company.

My first proper hi fi journey started with them if you exclude the Garrard , Trio and Leak speakers . I brought a Tannoy Tresham ( pre power combo ) then a bit later the even better a quirky Croft Super Micro ( cream and brown biscuit tin) . Heard they still have some of the more interesting brands online along with the more mainstream ones in the shop. A company with great values and an inspired owner .

What a great letter. I‘ve shopped at Richer Sounds a lot over the years with the last purchase this week when I purchased a new TV for my father in law. Ordered on Thursday afternoon & delivered the next day - the driver brought the box into the house. Great service.

Hi there,

I was sorry to read your comments on this thread and offer my sincere apologies, it goes without saying that you should have had a response to your query so I'm extremely that appears not to have been the case.

To clarify, prices fluctuate pretty wildly in our industry, both up and down for all sorts of reasons, but primarily availability from suppliers and the prices we have to pay to our suppliers.

So, this can mean that products (annoyingly for all) may be sold in the following Black Friday promotion at prices that are higher than during the preceding year but rest assured that all the deals that we sell are at the keenest prices possible at the time of the Black Friday ‘event’ (which, please note, starts several days before the day itself).

So that I may investigate the specifics of your complaint further, please would you be so kind as to contact me? My personal e-mail address is..

Whilst I appreciate your message, it just proved that Black Friday isn’t what it’s cracked up to be. It was last year and it’s probably best to put it down to experience and let the thread go back on track.
It doesn’t put me off Richer Sounds at all but sharing experiences is important.

I have to say that I'm mightily impressed that RS take the time and effort to follow up on forum conversations - I doubt most companies would either know or care about what's being said in these environments, so top marks for that, and at least the effort to rectify the issue.

One thing I have noticed on the RS website is that certain products do show a "price history" that indicates when it was being sold and at what cost. I think that's an excellent move in the right direction of full price transparency, and I would encourage the continuation of this to encompass ALL products.

I agree @Rockchild that Black Friday is a bit of a hit and miss thing - too many retailers (and I'm not looking at the one that's the current topic of conversation) either use it as an excuse to shift old tat with the use of exaggerated marketing, or to offer less-than-good price "deals" that in fact, aren't. I've heard of examples where white goods are being sold as a Black Friday deal, but in fact the price was inflated prior to the sale period so that it could be "discounted", despite the fact that it's still more than the "normal" selling price.

That sort of unscrupulous behaviour just undermines confidence in the retail industry and ends up with reputable companies being tarred with the same brush. That said, if you take the time to scour around there are some genuine bargains to be had, but it's difficult to sort the wheat from the chaff, I find.

I bought my first two systems from that very store …
I used to love popping in and looking at their old used PX stock at the back in the early 90s. That stopped a few years later which I missed but appreciate it was a bit messy and not the sort of impression they wanted to give.

I'm very glad that I happened upon this thread. I may have bought some stuff from Richer Sounds many years ago; I can't be 100% sure. But, after seeing this, I shall not hesitate to buy from them in the future!

The original London Bridge shop. Stuff packed floor to ceiling. Wasn't it once acclaimed as London's busiest shop?
