Im considering a valve pre? Currently using the M8. I heard the primo in my system and very silky and detailed. At around £5500 ex dem anyone like to throw in a possible rival at less money?

Nice BAT in the classifeds that might be woth a look, as well as the Puresound L300/10, Modwright, Audionote, Concordant, Croft etc etc....Lots out there, worth getting to a bake off or two if you aren't in a rush. Even better, host a bake off if you can and I am sure a few wammers local to you will turn up with a variety of pre amps to try. You may be surprised by something that you hadn't considered previously.

Audio Research Ref 3 could potentially be a grand less...
Interesting...I actually heard the AR 3 in my system against the primo...in comparison it seemed a little sluggish.

Nice idea regarding the bake off...im new to this and Im assuming its an open house to compare kit??? Any chance you could point me in the right direction in the classifieds? Just had a hunt through and cant find the BAT..but then I have been without sleep for 36 hours now! Thanks for your help....oops...just found it...looks stunning and according to the press its an outstanding preamp...just one issue, I need both balanced and single ended.

An L300 should definitely be on your list to try then. There is one for sale here at £3.5k

Sorry for pimping  but my Soundsmith SG 410 (which is up for sale) is a few level above and yes, I have had MF Primo in my listening room.

Having owned one, Puresound L300 has to be near top of the pile. Utterly stunning thing.

Downsides are 1: It's BIG and cosmetically 'interesting'. 2: It has (true) balanced outs, but only single-ended in. However, as it's proper balanced out, the inputs won't be too much of a challenge. Try it if you can. I very much doubt you'll be disappointed.

Personally I'd get shot of al the MF amps and start over. :zip:

Failing that, and I know it's not valves, the Audio Salon (www.hi-fishop.com) have a Gryphon Sonata Allegro, including the allegedly brilliant Legato phonostrage module, for £4.5k.

Interesting point...as its becoming more and more apparent that so many dealers are giving up on marketing MF. Yet another dealer today has confirmed they wont be selling more MF....which was not the first ive come across in the last few weeks of perusing this topic. In my view its a shame as a good product.
