Naim Nait 5i-2 & SBT

I have recently acquired the Naim 5i-2. Unfortunately, I did not search interweb beforehand and now realise there is a long standing issue of the Nait not liking the SBT....producing a low level, but clearly audible hum.

Having trawlled internet it seems this is not an issue for everyone with this combination, but a significant amount. So far I have not been able to find a solution. I (possibly wrongly ) assume a linear power supply would solve this...but do not have the funds at the minute (just bought the Nait).

Anyone know if this would definitely fix this issue? Or if there is an alternative fix?

I thought maybe an sbooster would help, but do not want to purchase in case it doesn't. Has anyone tried?

Many thanks for any thoughts, advice, help.

I don't have a SBT but I found that my old Naim cd5i and Nait 5i-2 were prone to humming transformers in my old house:-

a. when the central heating pump was running

b. when the dehumidifier fired up

c. when the vacuum cleaner was being used

The CD5i was worse than the amp but it never bothered me since it was only audible if there was no music playing and I was within say a metre of the system.

In my brother in law's house they didn't hum at all.

Your hum sounds like a different issue to one I had but just in case..., have you bypassed the volume on the Touch to fixed at 100% in the options? I once has an intolerable hiss until I tried this and it help a lot. As I say sounds like something else but worth checking.

Thanks for the answers...Not sure about 'bypassing' the volume, but keep at 100%...have tried various permutations but hum still there...when I unplug either SBT power supply the hum from amp goes.... I can use cd player, turntable and (believe it or not) tape deck and no hum...and there was no hum with old amplifier from SBT.

Tempted to buy sbooster, but do not know if that will sort it or not?

Still enjoying 'no problems-lovely' original 2004-5 Naim 5 source and amp, I advise maybe trying for help on official Naim Forum.

The power supply of the SBT is known to inject some noise back into the mains. If this is the source of your problem a simple way to prove it would be to run an extension lead from an outlet on a different fuse circuit and see if the noise is reduced or eliminated. If it is a ground loop due to incompatible earthing then trying different interconnects might help, as might the introduction of a DAC.

Thanks...not sure about those hum eliminators...look more for us market and instruments rather than hi fi?

Will try the extension lead when I get home tomorrow....anyone ever tried sbooster to help with this?

Hi, thanks again for suggestions. I have now had a chance to run extension lead from sockets all over the house to the SBT but hum remains. Have tried moving SBT as far as I can from amp but still connected....hum remains. I have tried 5 different interconnects (phono only) from SBT to naim....still hum.

I do not currently have an external dac, but hoped to sort this without purchasing something to 'just try'....in case it doesn't work.

Not sure what to suggest after that. I would advise against buying a linear PSU or S-Booster until you have had an opportunity to see if it cures your problem. Having never connected my SBT's up by their analogue outputs I have never experienced what you are hearing but as you have said, it would be expensive to buy a DAC just to cure a hum.

Seems to me that a decent DAC + optical connection is worth a try & should offer galvanic isolation between the SBT & the Naim amp. Its a proven fix that works in many cases with electrically noisy lappy's/pooters. :^ :^

Where are you based Hermano?? perhaps a Wammer could visit with a Dac to try this.

Blimey, I go away for a day and weird things happen to my thread....nevermind.

Quick question...does anyone have experience of sbooster and SBT? Any thoughts on it sorting out my hum?

Anyone from Inverness or North of Inverness got a dac I can borrow to test?

thanks...and stop hijacking my thread...
