Today, my Komris have bass in stereo, again 💫

I'm now very familiar to steaming, since the NG KDSM took the place of my CD12 (back in my home office system).
My LP-12 is on sale in my dealer shop in Paris, as this new digital beast does it all for me.
Like I said else where, I'm not a real black disc lover, after all………………
So I prefer that someone enjoy this beautiful box, at a much much better price than new :)

So……………

Next week, 2 NAS will be finally installed on the home network (one for music, one for work). The units will be connected in a little room downstairs with the principal switch and Fiber connexion.

I've never used a NAS and listen to music from it…
The idea – no surprise here! – is to rip the thousands CDs I own, of course – ouch! – and to be able to buy new albums in HD or CD quality on Qobuz (and elsewhere), like I did with real CDs and vinyls when I loved them and support music artists.

As the NG KDSM changed a lot inside, what are your feelings about the quality of sound between NAS and Streaming now?

Experience with other streamers are welcome too, of course :):):)

I very rarely use my NAS now and can’t remember the last CD or download I bought. I listen to Qobuz, Vinyl and BBC internet radio and love it all. I may prefer the version I have on the NAS, or I may prefer the one on Qobuz, but, to be honest, I never waste time comparing. Too much music, so little time. Enjoy your return to two channels.

welcome back in Komri heaven.👍

Good to know that you‘re a steaming expert 😂

Even invested a lot in my music server (optimized with two Linear Power Supplies, Windows Server 2012 R2, JCat OCXO NetCard, Audio-SSD for OS, 4 TB Music SSD, ridiculous expensive SATA canles, Industry RAM, etc …) I managed, that Streaming has now the same quality as the NAS. Conclusion: it always depends how you implement the hardware (and software).

I am with ‘Troll. I just select an album and never bother to check if it’s on my NAS or via Qobuz as the difference, if any, is minimal. I also, never bother actually buying an album any more as the subscription covers it all.

When I think about the amount of time I spent ripping my CD’s, tagging and getting album art, I wish Qobuz had been available back then. Personally, I would not have bothered and just put them up the attic. I would recommend you just use Qobuz for a few months and then decide if you want to go through the tedium of ripping your collection.

One other thing to remember, if you do start ripping, take regular back ups. Ripping is bad enough once without having to do it again

Thanks Troll and Ben,

Navigating in the forum seems to give this return: streaming is now up to local files on NAS… And that's good to me too, as comparing is waste of time and there is not enough time for all this music, Troll, you name it :)

The second point is more complex to me:
You two being vinyl addicts – and that's really cool – there is a way for you to give money to artists.
If you are only digital, NAS seems the only way to go: there is no logic to buy CDs when you have access to HD files………

Again, I would love to say after all these years that I really connect to analogic, but it didn't happened… just personal taste of course.
Vinyl + streaming remains the best solution, when you have two front ends of the same quality, and use them equally.

The only downside with Qobuz is, that I‘m not able to structure my music. I‘m only able to add albums to my favourites. Or do I miss anything?

You're right, this was the sub question: is it really necessary to rip all these CDs, if the difference doesn't exist! The last months with the KDSM were so much better and still will!
Would same me a lot of time :)

You could save Playlists, but I still think it’s a lot of work.

I wouldn’t describe myself as a “vinyl addict”. The LP12 was my first Linn Product, 42 years ago, and was my only source until the late 90s when I bought a Karik/Numerik. I just can’t bring myself to part with my LP12, even though it hasn’t been my main source for several years. It was only with the Radikal 2 that I felt it was comparable, or preferable to the NGKDSM.

I seems that Linn has managed this thing for the first time:
to be simple, make digital and analog equally musical…

42 years is a long road, congrats :)

For your benefit, I just compared a song, one copy on Qobuz and the other a ripped CD from the NAS. I really can't tell them apart. Lately, I've been buying CDs to support the artists, and to complete collections. In both cases, the albums are not available on LP. Being a vinyl addict, I prefer the LP.

However, I generally don't listen to the CDs. I don't even bother ripping them. I just listen on Qobuz or on Tidal. The sound quality is there, so I just haven't seen the need to go through all the work. However, I'll get around to ripping someday.

Thanks Michael!

From your experience, is it new this "no difference" between NAS and Qobuz, with the last streamers of Linn, or is it older?
I mean: it seems that streaming catch the NAS now, it wasn't the case before?

As I wasn't in streaming at all some months ago, I don't really know.

I‘ve more than 6.000 records and it‘s always a pleasure to put One on the LP12.

But when starting from the scratch I would only invest in digital source (not necessarily Linn, but it‘s a good starting point 😜).

Yes, that‘s not the way I want. Browsing through Minim Server is a pleasure. Roon could be an option, but the tagging in Qobuz is different from what I did with my local music.

But as you mentioned: just listen to the music is the easiest way.

Maybe a different version…
Or different resolution? However, I did a test a while back and couldn't tell the difference between Qobuz 16/44, Qobuz 24/96, and ripped CD. I couldn't tell them apart in a blind test. I find the original recording makes a much bigger difference than the resolution.

I‘m quite sure that even with the latest Linn Streamer the infrastructure (Router, Switch, NAS, Ethernet Cables, …) is still very important.

I must admit that the resolution on Qobuz doesn't make a better sound…

A lot of time, when I appreciate the music of a new album and its sound, I check and half of the time it's CD resolution.

On the contrary, when it's not good… half of the time it's HD resolution… !

So…

Another problem with Qobuz is, that there are a lot of unknown/new labels who offer „high res“ remastered files of original albums. These files sound big but most are totally wrong for my ears.
