Before the NG Klimax DSM, I really didn't listen to DS, just as background music. So I didn't really care about which was better. However, I really don't remember having a preference of one over the other. All I know is that now, with the NG Klimax, DSing is relevant in all formats. Thanks Michael!
From your experience, is it new this "no difference" between NAS and Qobuz, with the last streamers of Linn, or is it older?
I mean: it seems that streaming catch the NAS now, it wasn't the case before?
As I wasn't in streaming at all some months ago, I don't really know.
Exactly my experience. The recording is so much more important.I must admit that the resolution on Qobuz doesn't make a better sound…
A lot of time, when I appreciate the music of a new album and its sound, I check and half of the time it's CD resolution.
On the contrary, when it's not good… half of the time it's HD resolution… !
So…
Katalyst was the first Linn DS where I can listen more than 30 minutes. Organik is much better.
So we can agree that really musical digital products are new…Katalyst was the first Linn DS where I can listen more than 30 minutes. Organik is much better.
For me, it was Akurate Exakt DSM that I couldn't listen to for more than 30 minutes. Klimax DSM changed that, even with Katalyst in place. Looking forward toKatalyst was the first Linn DS where I can listen more than 30 minutes. Organik is much better.
It's insane when you consider that the first digital player show off in 1982
The streaming services have progressed significantly in sound quality over the past two years. I often stream what I don’t have, use the NAS for what I do, and that which I like and have heard via streaming services, purchase a hi-res file of, if possible and CD if not, to support the artist.
It is disappointing that Linn still seem unwilling to make native some services like IDAGIO, Apple, etc.
Qobuz is not available worldwide and Tidal is of limited use for classical music.

I agree. This is the main reason that I still use my NAS as I have 2000+ CDs on there. I hardly ever pull up an 'owned' album on Qobuz - simply because it is easier to find on my NAS. I can't comment on quality within this thread as it is comparing a NG K streaming. On my KDS/1 though I still prefer the NAS - and I usually prefer vinyl to either DS sources (not always). The artist revenue question is a big one. I was speaking with a very well respected jazz saxophonist a couple of weeks ago - with quite a back catalogue. He played a very small gig (very small) but told me that revenue from CD sales that night (probably less than 20 - maybe even 10) would easily outstrip his monthly streaming revenue. If you are a huge artist then the model may work - but if not it the income stream is very small indeed. I bought a couple of CDs that night and will rip them (but at the moment I'm playing them on the Unidisk - and have no complaints)! You could save Playlists, but I still think it’s a lot of work.
In my digital Akurate Exakt system I quite agree - the change from an exaktbox-i to a Katalyst exaktbox -I was significant. In my Analogue active system no, I find that my KDS/1 doesn't require Katalyst. The rooms are very different though and my analogue system is fortunate to be in a very good room acoustically. (Or, probably more accurately - the room and the system are very well matched).Katalyst was the first Linn DS where I can listen more than 30 minutes. Organik is much better.
@Chris 1970 ,
What software do you plan on using to do the ripping? When the time comes, perhaps we could discuss as I have questions.
Merci,
Michael

Hi Chris,
I do not own any Klimax DSM but Majik DSM and vintage Linn equipment only.
Personally I cannot hear any “sound improvement“ with Hi-Res files compared to a CD and agree that recording quality matters more than resolution.
I still buy vinyl and CD‘s but usually just rip the CDs for my NAS.
Although I do have a Tidal and Qobuz subscription I prefer to buy music I do like which also has the benefit that I can still listen to my music even if there are problems with internet access and/or Tidal/Qobuz.
Even if you have a large CD collection I would therefore still recommend to rip the entire collection. Yes, this will be time consuming but there are some nice software tools available which make this an easy process.

I ripped over 8,000 songs to my Mac Mini before I had a streamer. I still listen to many of them. I currently listen to Qobuz or LP12, as well as my ripped CDs

Hi Michael - I use DBPowerAmp on a Mac and Minimserver on the NAS. With DBPoweramp it pays to really think about how you are going to catalogue the whole collection before you rip your first CD- I've given up on trying to re-assign things at a later date. I often wonder whether it was worth the initial effort - but in those days streaming services were MP3 or really expensive and limited. My NAS is now 10 years old - this concerns me a little as it is basically a 10yr old computer. Also, QNAP don't appear to be the most secure things on the planet. However, as posted above, it is sooo much easier to access my own music than to make playlists (on. let's face it, a platform that could change its modus operandi in a heartbeat). I find that the Linn boxes in the loft make great CD storage units!@Chris 1970 ,

@Dasher - I use a 10 year old Mac mini with Thunderbolt Attached Storage. No worries about security as I block Internet Access to and from it. Could you do the same with your QNAP then you should not have to worry about its security?
A reason Roon didn’t appeal was its dependence on the Internet. I too try to tag right directly after ripping or downloading (on an old MacBook) with XLD Secure Ripper (should give same rip as dBPowerAmp as it checks against AccurateRip. I use Metadatics, LyricsFinder and JRiver Analyser to complete the rest of the tags (Dynamic Range, Peak Levels, HDCD etc.).
I tend to search in the same way I would with a physical collection. I usually play entire albums.

I know I keep banging on about it, but if you like a piece of music that much, then buy it. Regardless of it being a download, record or CD. With streaming, you run the risk of it mysteriously disappearing overnight, because the streaming service’s right to use license has expired.
Also bear in mind that not all CDs by bands are on Qobuz, I have a number on my NAS and owned that are not there nor I think ever will be.
My only complaint on a NAS is I can’t get linn to play 5.1 from a network source only via HDMI which is a pain

Yes, I've gone through all of the procedures to block internet access to and from it. I'm pretty sure that it is locked out but it is difficult to be 100% certain.@Dasher - I use a 10 year old Mac mini with Thunderbolt Attached Storage. I have absolutely no fu***** clue about 5.1 content streaming from a NAS but apparently the No 1 Surround Expert here in this forum managed to get a painless solution up and running:My only complaint on a NAS is I can’t get linn to play 5.1 from a network source only via HDMI which is a pain
Link to the thread from Sep 2020: https://www.hifiwigwam.com/forum/th...l-katalyst-surround-system.96184/post-1949299I have all my digital 5.1 surround music on my QNAP NAS, which is connected to my Akurate Hub through the switch by Ethernet .
My OPPO 203 is also connected to my Akurate Hub through HDMI, but it is also connected to my switch and network. The OPPO can see all the music on my NAS, when I select network in settings on the OPPO.
Then I just have to point my OPPO to specific albums on the NAS and they play brilliantly. Without the OPPO to do the surround processing and convert everything to a PCM stream, the Akurate Hub will not allow 5.1 streaming. The OPPO also allows me to stream DSD music files, as it does the conversion from DSD to PCM

The only downside with Qobuz is, that I‘m not able to structure my music. I‘m only able to add albums to my favourites. Or do I miss anything?
No, I find that too.
It would be nice to be able to catalogue them.
I just store them in Artists name, but does mean you have to scroll through all of them to get to “Yello”.
