After using macs for 10 years , for various reasons I've moved back to windows (version 8) and I'm a bit lost with current software choices etc etc

Can anyone recommend good DVD ripping and burning software (free if possible) ?

For audio I've installed media monkey and EAC which seems to be used by many around here.

Good luck in your solutions.

As far as possible, I prefer to use - in Windows since 1995 - hardware/software I have purchased inexpensively/obtained 'free' with my computers-OS.

This includes mainly Nero with VCD-DVD burning (you might have to pay about £18 to obtain video-burning codices etc).

In-built Windows Movie-Maker can be useful, as are my various currently-utilised:

Arcsoft ShowBiz - Arcsoft Video d'loader - Arcsoft Media converter (supplied 'free' with fine Aldi Medion £16.99 videograbber).

DVD Shrink 3.2 - Any Video Converter 5 - WinFF - AVS Video Converter - Video ReDo Suite.

Am avoiding Win 8 still, although I am sure that at root it is as good as XP-Win 7.

I admit that as HDD prices are so good (cheaper per gigabyte/probably more durable than my drums of CDr-rw-DVDr-rw etc) that I keep many copies on backup HDD of videos I want/have processed suitably, which I have no need to stick on e.g. digital plastic disks.

yep ...forgot about mkv...that's all I use for ripping now.....then I stream and don't use discs.

along as your chosen player supports mkv that's the most straight forward easy one to use...pretty quick too

I need to consider another option than MKV for ripping box sets as for those I wish to preserve the menu system which I don't believe you can with MKV. I've not worked out the best way of going about this yet though.

think you can preserve the menu options...cant quiet remember as its ages since I used it..... but its left click jobbie which brings down a selection of what you whish to keep....was using mkv for ages before I found that one out....I'm sure theres a mkv forum with lots of info

...also a quick google will bring up a new code to use once the old one runs out...think it comes from the same forum if I remember rightly...this will then last a couple of months before a new one is posted

I think it's free indefinitely for DVD but not for Bluray. I've been using it within Vortexbox so have not had access to options but will take a look at it via windows, thanks.

....I only use it now for bluray rips

.....as I say when the free version runs out the mkv site...cant remember if its the developers or a dedicated forum site....a quick google will tell you....unless its all changed post a new free trial serial key which you can then carry on using

......sort of whats the point of a free trial but there you go

really is a great bit of software for ripping blu discs....you can also choose which audio to use if you're short on space

done all my bluray discs and got them on a media players built in hard drive

its on the mkv forum I believe

cheers

I had a look and it seems that if you download it onto windows it's as you say but within Vortexbox it only works for DVD without a licence. I have now downloaded the Beta version onto windows and can use it independently of the vorexbox then copy it onto it over the network.
