I recently watched some video's that Ocd hifi guy made on amplification, which I found interesting and illuminating regarding the internal quality of some hi end manufacturer's amplification. I will not name any of these manufacture's.
He opened up some of these amplifiers and even to a non electrical engineer like myself, some of the material and how it was implemented seemed dubious upon observation.
What was shocking and obvious was the wiring was all over the place and the flimsy sheet metal used as isolation inside some of these £50,000 amplifiers.
The point he was making was some of these products are sold on marketing and branding and not on audiophile quality.
Now, my knowledge on how to build an amplifier is very limited, however It does seem to me that capacitors, power supplies, wiring, heat sinks, and the boards to mount them on, as well as the chassis follow a law of physics and unless the parts used are made of precious metals, then even the highest quality is difficult to justify what he was showing inside some of these very expensive amplifiers.
Anyway it has made me think about any potential purchase in terms of parts used and how it's put together.
He also believes a separate pre amp is a waste of money for a digital rig, he says it's best to buy a top quality dac with a volume control on it.
He is an interesting guy, where audio equipment is concerned and whilst I feel he offers useful knowledge, he does seem to lack flexibility in his opinions.
