I’m looking at the options available.

At the minute I have the option of a baby reference (10 years old) or a brand new classic v2.

Could anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks in advance.

I’ve noticed 2 different volumes types.
1-24
Increments of 2 to 40 something. What’s the difference?

My suggestion would be 48 which just happens to be double 24 . The additional 24 steps would give you adjustments at half the level of the 24 step one . More steps mean finer adjustments and more chance you can hit on the right volume for you .

Thought that must be how it works, finer adjustments..

I owned the V2 for about 5 years. It’s brilliant, best pre amp I’ve owned. My only issue was the stepped volume and I did find the 1-24 a tiny bit annoying. Most of the time it’s fine but with some recordings they were just a tiny bit too loud or too low. If there’s not much cost difference in it I’d go baby ref.

Edit. Now I think of it maybe it wasn’t 24 but it definitely wasn’t 48! Anyway more is better.

Edit again! I take it all back it was 48! I must be going mad but obviously I wanted 96! It was a brilliant pre and either will be excellent. A fellow wammer bought it from me so maybe they will update with their impressions.

The baby ref is one the finest pieces of kit I have ever demo'd . I didn't buy it because it just didn't gel with the analogue side of my system . Thats doesn't mean it was bad . Far from it . With digital is was exceptional .

You want smaller steps at your typical listening volumes. We configure 50% of available volume when the pot is at 75% open. After that, the steps are larger. 24 steps, configured in this way, can still give plenty of useful fine adjustment.
