Got myself in a right pickle today moving my Focal 1028BE speakers for carpet cleaning and general tidying, very heavy and even with my wife helping we really couldn't manage it properly/safely. (I have a prosthetic lower leg implant now due to my cancer treatment, all good and scans clear, but I'm as mobile as ever I will be!!)
So what stand mount speakers would you suggest please?

Budget is value of Focals sold(eBay sold items suggested £1700-2000?) plus a bit maybe. Used I think it might have to be.
We loved the Proac 1sc pair we had years ago and Wilson Benesch Arcs

Thanks, I know I can ignore cleaning !!!

The ProAcs like very heavy stands and may not be any lighter than your Focals.

It may be better looking for something that prefer light open frame stands.

Standmounts can be awkward to move though , im sure the mission 770 come with stands but are they to large.
agree with jon above about the 400 s ,

I’ve found pros and cons with both designs as far as moving goes.

A floorstander is difficult To ‘grab’ and lift, but at least it’s solid and if the spikes are on granite, you can walk them a little to get to dust or slide a duster stick thingy under.

Stand mounts can still be heavy, especially if your wanting the same deep sound and end up with quite a large box. Then of course you have to lift them of first before moving, put them somewhere then move the stand, re position/align on the stand which can be a faff.

I don’t really have to move my speakers(I can’t any way) to clean, are yours close to the wall and system? not able to get in??

Whatever standmount you decide on , what it sits on is part of the overall “ sound” height is also a factor .. I have several standmount speakers in the mancave and four very different stands to put them on ..

yes absolutely adored my focal 1028be but as you say they are big . The tannoy eaton legacy standmounts are a fraction of the size . still give a great deal of that satisfying bass and just sound so incredibly natural. I dont think the 1028be would be able to come back now. the imaging i think is better and just easier to handle

the tonality of the Eaton is also absolutely exceptional. The crossover between the mid-range driver and the tweeter is low at 1.2kHz giving it a lot of work to do but it never seems under any strain. Voices and instruments sound natural and are smooth and free of any signs of harshness or aggression. The Naim Supernait2 I use for the bulk of test work is a far cry from Naim amps of old but it can still be provoked with some speakers. This is utterly unlikely to happen with the Eaton which is completely unflappable even when you throw a poor recording at it and dial up the volume. This is an exceptionally composed speaker under pretty much any condition – and even if you did dial up the volume, you have the option of rolling off the HF output slightly.

Above all these things is a sense of weight and presence with everything you play. This needs to be qualified as slightly different to outright bass extension. Make no mistake, the Eaton has no shortage of bass under pretty much any condition – that 40Hz figure is effortlessly bettered in this room – but where the Tannoy truly excels is with the point where the lower mid-range becomes bass. Without sacrificing control or integration, the Eaton has a level of grunt here that makes most rivals seem anaemic.

Spotted https://herbiesaudiolab.com/collect...s/threaded-stud-glider?variant=12651505745975 a while ago, moving my speakers is a pia,but being a extreme tight arse I’ve made my own version with some furniture gliders spike shoes etc,so good my wife heard the difference from her coffee morning 3 streets away 🤫
currently making a mk2 threaded wobbly version which is going to be even better!
In all honesty it has made my speakers sound better because I can slide them into the optimum position which doesn’t mix well with everyday life, and slide them back out of the way after listening.

Thanks for all your replies - really very helpful thanks a lot.
I've been doing some measurements and experiments with my manoeuvrability with suitable sized(empty) boxes and have concluded I can cope with moving 2 smaller speakers and placing them on stands, provided I rehearse things well.
Now researching Buchardt S400 MKll, Raidho, ProAc Response DB1, Mission 770 and Tannoys

Is anyone using Harbeths or Spendors at all? Might these be good to place in the mix?

Cheers and thanks

I use Harbeths - but not the "Move Friendly" ones.......though Harbeths are the opposite end of the sonic spectrum to Focal.

Spendor Classic are more like Harbeth soundwise - but the other models of Spendors are more "modern sounding".

STOP! Please don't change floor-standers for stand-mounts - you'll almost certainly be disappointed in the sound.

Instead, work out a way to move your speakers easily without straining yourself - or your wife. I found a Youtube video that shows an easy and almost effortless way to move heavy speakers on carpets that are reluctant to move. If I find it, I'll post it here.

Basically you tilt the speaker (sideways or for-and-aft) so that 2 feet / spikes leave the carpet. Slide a sheet of hardboard, tea-tray, hard plastic plastic or anything that will slide over carpeting and lower speaker onto this board. This is easiest done with a helper but otherwise place it close to the speaker and give it a nudge with your foot - difficult for you maybe. Repeat the other way so you now have all 4 feet / spikes on slippery surfaces that can be moved acroos the carpet. Even easier if you have a length of cord and feed it under the speaker so you can ensure the "pull" is applied to the base of the speaker.

If you had hard floors with sticky feet (IsoAcoustic Gaias, etc) you can do the same but use a tea towel or two to allow the speakers to slide.

Peter
