Pre amp or variable output?

Looking at a DAC on eBay, it has variable output rather than a pre, is there a difference pro/cons will it work?

I need volume control for various inputs.

I have a dac with a variable output , sounds dreadful without a pre amp but I am sure there are some that sound good

Try the Lampi - IMO I don't need an Audio Research Ref pre in the middle, can send it to the Power amp direct. Though I will verify this again next month

I'm looking at the Cairn Ezo, not set my heart on it would like to know the differences in variable output and pre, if there is any :?

Owners of pre amplifiers such as Kondo M7 add them to their system because they add a certain sound. Yes you can use a Dac with volume control straight in to a power amplifier but whether it will be enjoyable to listen to will be a subjective matter.
