Preamp options with Croft 7R power amp

I am in the process of getting a Croft 7R power amp.

I intend to try out a Croft Micro25 or a Croft Charisma pre amp (anyone compared the two by the way) anyway with the 7R

But, also wondering if there anyone has tried out other tube pre amps with a Croft 7 or 7R power amp? Preferably something without the double volume controls that the Croft pres have (which drives me a little bit mad at times) and maybe even with (god forbid ) a remote!

Any experiences/thoughts all you good people?

Hi Deba,

I have tried combinations the other way around ie non Croft power amps with his pre's with reasonable success, but in my experience of the 25R/7 combination I would stick with either the Micro 25 or Charisma.

Thanks Alan. Will definitely be trying a Croft pre. But keen to experiment with other ones as well

I am using an audio note m one pre-amp with a croft twinstar. I really wanted a valve pre-amp with a remote - lazy I know. In my opinion they are a really good match and sound great together. There was a little too much gain from the AN pre-amp for the Croft but his was easily sorted with Rothwell Attenuators which have reduced the gain by 10db. I think a lot of valve pres have quite high gain as they are often used with low power amps so if you dont like the idea of using attenuators you will need to impedance match the pre-amp to your 7R pretty carefully.
