Im looking at upgrading from my current speakers, the ProAc Response s1
My setup comprises of Roksan Caspian M2 integ amp and a Caspian M2 power amp and cd player.
2x Rel t5i subs and the ProAc S1

Don't have a budget as such just yet, though i think i’d prefer going used, and i’d have to sell the ProAcs to boost my budget
somewhat.
I dont really have the time going around dealers having demos so your thoughts would be welcome

Firstly, have a poke around the ProAc Owners thread if you’re generally happy with the ProAc sound (most owners are and I’d wager often end up with a different ProAc!).
Secondly, I don’t recognise that model: please confirm model and age. Thanks

Finally, tell folk what you think would constitute an upgrade otherwise you’ll get a load of random recommendations which won’t help. Do you think you want more bass? More resolution? Sweeter mids? It’s really hard to recommend (or choose) without involving ears..

+1 exactly this.

I think he means the 1sc Nigel. I noticed there was another thread last year with loads of recommendations!

To the op, what Nigel says is spot on, what you like and dislike of your current speakers would help and what type of presentation your looking for.

i like watching that guy on youtube who does reviews . as far as i can see nothing beats his 1sc :) !!

He mentioned in a couple of videos that he finds only ATC SCM 19 better than his 1SC, but that 1SC is still an incredible speaker. I've had 1SC and it's a truly wonderful speaker. In a not too large room, it misses absolutely nothing. Put it on very heavy and inert stands, give it top quality amplification and you're good to go. Still remember listening to King Crimson's Islands for the first time on it and the way Formentera lady sounded. Wonderful.

If you do indeed mean the 1SC, then I would suggest that you proceed with caution - with the right amplifier, and correctly positioned on tall, high mass stands (possibly with the addition of a high quality sealed box subwoofer), you would have to invest a very substantial sum to better them - especially in the midrange - it took me nearly 20 years to find anything that I was prepared to accept as an alternative, and I'd happily go back were it not for domestic constraints on speaker positioning... (my ANs work best in the corners) - what other equipment are you using? Possibly there might be a better target for your potential investment.

As an owner of 1SCs I have done a lot of reading on them including countless threads on blogs.

It seems a large number of folk who sell them regret it.

I ran an Caspian Integrated plus Caspian power amps. I bought two power amps and used the integrated as a pre only. One of my biggest upgrades was when I swapped in a valve pre amp instead of the Caspian Pre section. I still use the Caspian power amps.

There appear to be a lot of folk running 1SCs fronted by very serious sources and amplification. This might suggest another way to go is to look elsewhere in your system first.

Just my thoughts.

There's a set of ProAc DB1's on eBay at the moment in a rather fetching rosewood colour. I have these on watch and was recently sent a seller offer for £1600. If I was buying a set of these (and I very nearly did as they are utterly stunning speakers), then that's a pretty decent deal imo.

I have no connection to that seller or pair of speakers, just pointing out what I think is a great deal. FYI, the last pair to sell I believe we're £1550 and not in as nice a finish.

DB1's are the successor to 1SC's.

Personally, I'd upgrade the amps.

But then again, I'm unsure of the difference between the Response 1s and 1sc or DB1. If it's significant then as mentioned by others, that might be a better upgrade.
.... But tbh, I'd still be looking at the amps first. I'm not a big Roksan fan. I think you might be shocked at what your Proacs can achieve with other amplification.

Why is it always that type of music which sounds decent through any speaker?
Because there’s nothing complex about it, and nobody ever heard it in real life to compare. If they play human voice, piano etc., that we all know the sound of, then you can tell!
