Project 9c/9cc Arms

Been toying with the idea of fitting one of these CF tonearms to my LP12 for a while now- itseems to bequite a popular mod in Europe although itisnot socommon here. Now generally the arm for sale is the 9c (indeed a certain needles and spins sells this very arm) for £400 or so. This has the Carbon tube but a seperate headshell. However the RPM9 turntable has the 9cc arm which is a one piece with the headshell also made from CF. This doesn't seem to be sold seperately which is a shame as (even if only reasons of aesthetics) I prefer it.

Now does anybody know if these cc arms are sold seperately and whether beyond looking cooler (always a tenuous reason to buy things) there is a big difference between the two? I can probably beg a 9cc arm off Project directly but I can't see myself getting much in the way of a meaningful performance comparison between the two arms from them.

Doesn't your LP12 have an Ittok fitted? If so, and i can't believe i'm saying it, i'd stick with that.

I finally got to have a play with a 9c recently and have to say i was a little underwhelmed.

Nope its an Akito equipped late 80's model. To reiterate- was that the one piece arm you tinkered with or the seperate headshell version?

TOF, why not ry a Roksan Nima on the LP12 if you fancy a change. You may need a new armboard as the Roksan doesn't follow the Linn geometry but from what I've been told these arms are a great match for the LP12 - cheaper then the project ones as well.

That'll be a 9cc then if it has the one piece arm and headshell. The RPM10 has a 10cc (10 inch not 9 inch

). What deck did you try it on? I've always wondered how these would fair on an LP12.

Next time I speak the the rep I'll ask. I suspect it wouldn't be a problem. Last time I asked them they had 1 of the old 9c models in stock and wanted to shift that before bringing in the new model, but that was months ago now.

If you are interested in a 9c, then PM me, I've got a minty one that came off an RPM9 on the shelf at the moment, never been used.

No it is a 9c, as fixed to an Xperience Comfort. What i meant was that it is fixed in the sense of not having a socket. In the same way that the headshell of an old SME 3009 with 'fixed headshell' is removeable if you undo the right screws!

Personally I'd go with Griffo on the Nima, as i've been playing with one of them, too (spot the upcoming turntable Group Test

) and was well impressed.

Aha. Well the other thing to keep in mind is that there are 9c arms and there are 9c arms as it were.

The 9c as sold separately and on the RPM6.1 and RPM9 (as was) has a fatter arm tube and uses the ABEC7 ballrace bearings.

The 9c as found on the RPM5 and Xperience models has a skinnier armtube (same as on the Xpression except a tad longer so far as I can see) and the sapphire bearings also found on theXpression. How much difference these differences make I can't tell as I've only ever heard them attached to their respective decks.

The NIma is known to work well on the LP12 though

I used a 9c on an RPM9 for about a year and have to say I wasn't overwhelmed by the build quality. It's pretty ropey, considering that £400 odd quid will get you a Technoarm.

Despite that, itsounded pretty good on the RPM9 though.

p.s. the 902i's sound MUCH better than the S30's. They actually have some bass!
