I know that the cable thread regarding Puritan was closed some time ago - as with any cable thread it provoked moments of heated discussion that were in danger of going nuclear so the mods understandably drew a line under it. However, I just thought it'd be worth a thread on the excellent mains conditioning kit that Puritan produce - I have no vested interest other than the 156 got rid of the amplifier transformer hum caused by DC that no other purifier I tried did, and at leat to my ears produced a significant improvement in sound quality - I've written about this previously as a digression in the cable thread - (https://www.hifiwigwam.com/forum/threads/puritan-mains-cables.101650/page-6#post-2079243.

This new thread was prompted by a recent Steve Huff video account of his problems with mains issues and eventually trying a Puritan 156 - see

I guess - and Huff also states this - that really such a piece of equipment is probably not going to do much if there are no mains issues affecting a system, but in my case as with Huff's the effect was transformative and arguably the best upgrade I made over many years - really all because of my wife's hairdryer - though she refuses to accept this! (In fact other devices were causing DC interference - including from neighbours in our terraced street, but apparently haidryers are the worst according to the Puritan main(!) man - Mike Lester).

I've put up some links to other reviews for interest, plus the one to the manufacturer:

Is this an advertorial? Puritan has good rep. I never understood why it is presumed that A/C noise passes through to DC on to components. Or is it?

Certainly not intended as an advert! As pointed out above, I have zero connection with Puritan (apart from owning one of their products, bought three years ago at full cost from a dealer, not directly from Puritan) - just thought it might be of interest and perhaps helpful to a few Wammers who might have mains issues - that’s all - but happy to withdraw/cancel thread if your comment is indicative of its general reception.

I can concur with your comments on the Puritan 156. I bought one a couple of years ago and it has been the best mains product I have owned. It simply reduced the noise floor in my system which allowed me to hear more music. I would put it up there as one of the best accessories I have bought for my system. I did have to smile when I watched the Huff video.

Have installed the Ground Master earth connector a couple of days ago: initial impressions positive, but will write more detailed post after it's had time to bed in and I have listened to full range of sources and music properly. Certainly seems to be a very reasonable tweak; much fun hammering-in 1mtr earth rod!

Because I know I get some DC leakage via my mains, I've tried a fair few DC blocking solutions over the years. Many of them do the job, but also I feel rob the music of some dynamics. The Puritan is the first I've tried that blocks the DC and does not rob the sound any. In fact it's made a profound difference in my system and not going anywhere!

Middle of last week I introduced one of these to the system:

It’s the PS106-DC. I couldn’t accommodate the PS136 so went for this scaled down version albeit at over 500mm long it‘s a pretty big unit but can be accommodated on the floor next to the rack.

Using the stock power cables that came with my various bits of kit it has definitely made a change to the sound. Everything sounds that little bit clearer and the soundstage definitely wider. Instrument separation is better too.

Friday saw the arrival of Puritan Classic cables that I installed on my DAC and Amp. Not had a chance to do some A/B comparisons but I will.

All in all I am very happy with the improvements the PS106-DC has brought. I’ll keep it in the system for a couple more weeks (there’s - if you believe this sort of thing - a burn In period with the Puritan) and then reinstall the old power strip (a Project Connect-It) and stock cables and see what I think.

Just bought a PM156 and a Groundmaster a week or so back.Actually have PM156 plugged into the high current output of a PS Audio P5 regenerator. One of the best upgrades I have ever made. Using a PS Audio Direcstream DAC and Mark Levinson power amps. The difference in the noise floor and dynamics is noticeable within the first few seconds. Get one.

Is Steve Huff a well regarded Hifi reviewer? I know he reviews cameras.
I like his reviews of a few things I’m interested in, like Pass Labs and Sonus faber. He has an interesting take on things, but it’s all very subjective, naturally. I see he raves about the 156! (I use the Classic mains leads)

All I can say is that I have a Hegel H590 which always had a low but audible hum when switched on. I bought the 156 about six months ago and now its silent. It just works.
