Reel to reel media?

Anyone know if reel to reel recordings are being reissued by anyone?

They do seem to be very thin on the ground, I've been fancying a tape machine (not least after some of the porn on in the classifieds though I doubt I'd be quite in the bracket of the Burmester that's there :upgrade: ) but the shortage of recordings puts me off.

I have a look on eBay from time to time but the price of anything you'd want to listen to is very high even compared to pristine vinyl.

I doubt I'd bother getting into vinyl now if I hadn't already been buying since the early 70s, I guess maybe tape is in the same category?

Would love to hear a decent tape machine against my current front end though and get a feel for what I might be missing.

Is the 'tape project' still running they offered refurbished machines and high quality first generation copies ,they were all the rage at HiFi shows a few years back.

Keith.

The Tape Project is pretty high cost - cost of entry (finding and/or modifying a suitable deck) and the cost of the tapes by subscription. Some artists have offered tape as an option, but it's usually at a premium over vinyl, which is already at a premium over CD or downloads. I think there are one or two other studios that have tape offerings similar to The Tape Project, without subscriptions required, but still expensive on a per-album basis. One of these days I think I'll spash out for one of the single albums, though that'll likely be when everything else in my system is at a good level of satisfaction (nearly there :) ), but in the mean time I have about 50 pre-recorded old tapes and over 100 tapes of various stuff, mostly 7.5ips with a few 15ips recordings.

Incidentally, in the photo is it the tape machine or the boots and daisy dukes you are looking at? :D
