Rega Saturn skipping far too much

Hi everyone,

I have a Rega Saturn which I bought s/h from a reliable elderly friend. Always been extremely happy with the sound, but it now surprises me to find the Saturn playing a cd without skipping, especially at the beginning of a cd.

This is not about bad cd's, nor about a dirty lens - it's about the Rega having a very poor pick up or damping system, I would say.

Hence the following two questions:

(1) does anybody have any experience with this, and is it anything Rega can actually take care of?

(2) I have heard of extortionate rates for Rega cdp's being repaired outside warranty periods - can anybody assist me in judging these rumours?

Thank you in advance for your attention,

Steven

I haven't a clue what you mean by 'poor pick up or damping system'

But I had the same issue with my Saturn when it was about 4.5 years old. Eventually it wouldn't read a CD at all.

I took it back to Audio T in Brighton where I had bought it brand new.

They got a new mech from Rega and fitted it for me. The Saturn has been perfect ever since.

Cost?

Absolutely nothing, fantastic service from Audio T and Rega.

My Saturn is sometimes a little slow registering some discs I am told this is normal , but it doesn't skip. My experience with Rega repairs is also superb via my local dealer. I damaged tweeters in a pair of R5 speakers. They provided replacements at cost. Something daft like 40 odd quid for them both and my dealer installed them for nothing.

I also had a problem with Exon 3 monos and they sorted it for free outside the warranty period and via a different dealer than I bought them from.

My apollo broke but i did not learn! I got it fixed(new mech) and sold it to a friend . Then bought a saturn, and that went (mech) . And to make things worse my old apollo went again ... My next purchase will be a dac and all my digital music is going on a hard drive with backup.. And my dac will not be a rega .

On a slightly pluss note i took my mates apollo apart cleaned and lubed it loosened the 3 rubber suspension supports and it had been working for a couple of weeks ! But i have not spoken to him for a while so i don't know if it's still working?

If the laser is attached to one or two metal bars, that it slides up and down on. It may be worth putting some grease on them. I've fixed loads of cd and dvd players with this trick. You can get little tubes of white grease off eBay.
