Hi

My Rega RP1 has started running slow recently.

It’s a standard deck apart from an Edwards Audio Blue little belter installed after being in storage for a while (within the past month)

Just recently, any 33 1/3 disc is running audibly slow.

Only thing that I can think of is my partner has been playing some really ropey 80’s 12” singles and has left the belt on the 45rpm section of the pulley for a few days

Platter takes very little pressure to come to a full stop.

Do you think that leaving the belt on the 45 section could stretch the belt enough to cause this or could it be something else?

45’s play fine btw

Thanks

A new belt shouldn't suffer from loss of elasticity, so shouldn't be a problem. Did you do a bearing oil change when you started re-using the deck? It may be worth giving the spindle bearing a clean out and re-oiling (3-4 drops should be sufficient) also clean the ballbearing. As it may be that the 33 rpm is not giving sufficient torque to overcome the stickyness (increased viscosity) of the old oil, where as the 45 rpm adds a little more tension to the belt to overcome this.

Thanks Lurch

I didn’t carry out an oil change so will have a look at that.

I’ve also had a snippet of new information from the person playing dodgy 80’s singles!! Apparently when the belt was changed over, the pulley came off as well!!!

After checking, the pulley does indeed just pull off with little force so I’ve just glued it back on (standard Rega plastic pulley) to see if that sorts the problem.

One of the common problems causing speed slowing and variation has been the plastic pully being less than secure on the motor capstain. I believe it is a push fit and a common remedy is to put a dab of superglue on the inner edge of the pulley to secure it to the capstain. Do some google searches (and you tube) there may be more on this.
