Replacement tweeter for more brightness

My Dad has been given some old TDL RTL3 speakers, the bass off them is good but he wants a brighter sound. They are only used in a garage and we don't mind hacking them up a bit or mounting a tweeter in a piece of wood bolted on top.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a suitable speaker that will add some brightness and extra detail, without any size constraints.

The components in the crossovers probably need an overhaul, it is a common issue with the RTLs.

^Agree with that. There's likely to be a series resistor for the tweeter. Reducing the value of that will increase the amount of treble.

Like R1011 here- I can change between 1.8, 2.2 and 2.7 ohms.

Just to update, I did some reading and heard about a change in the crossover to improve midrange performance. After changing a 10 ohm to a 22 ohm they have really opened up. Just looking for a tweeter now. We have two possible candidates.

Morel Classic CAT298-94

The Vifa will need a resistor to attenuate it. Anyone know which would be the better option?

If you attenuate with a resistor, it gives you the option to increase the treble by reducing the resistor. Other than that, I don't know what those two tweeters sound like.

Looking at the specs, the Vifa is 4ohm, the Morel is 8ohm. Crossover needs are different.

it should be a drop in replacement physically, the crossover should be ok, and may benefit from being optimized, but i'd be tempted to drop in the tweeter and see how you go.

We have ordered the Vifa from Falcon Acoustics, he is also supplying some resistors which he said will attenuate them, I'll try with and without them ans see what's best.

If you are rebuilding the crossover, when you reconnect to the drive units keep the Xover outside of the speaker cabinet and away from the magnets of the drive units. You should hear a supprising difference!
