These are original Vw ones for the car and the first time I've used bars. I've just installed them and they are clamp type that grip over the edge of the roof. It looks like the lip in the rear bar should go in further but the window seal stops it so there is only a couple of mm to clamp against. Is this just how these bars are on all cars.

Since they will have cost you an arm & leg, I would drive it down to the dealers and have them check it is fitted correctly. Otherwise you will end up cockpunched for slowing the M5. :D

You need one of these:

- drives exactly the same

- space for luggage on the inside

- you don't look like one of the German Village People

(Even available with giant chavvy wheels! :^ )

I've a normal shaped car too. I'll have an estate car when I'm 50.
what happens when you're 50? You buy dogs, luggage and start to go camping?

Oh I get it...you mean your brain develops from 'mmmmmm, shiny, want' to 'mmmmm practical, want'

Yup. True. :)

To Bourney...NOOOO...I'd not tie more than two pillows to that lot. I agree, drive to a VW dealer and get them to load two large and angry gorillas to the bars.

You might want to get your suspension checked out while you're there - looks like all your springs have collapsed...

On one of my older Golf's they used to have lugs under the gutter to locate the roof bars securely, on later models the location system is just a friction only clamp like yours I think..

At that point I decided not to bother with roof bars any more...

I am 50 (plus a bit), do have an estate car, though to be fair have had one since I was 30 ish, they have some luggage space. but not lots. They do however have proper rails and rack that support stuff. I would suggest that you put stuff on the roof that doesn't matter, wife and kids type of stuff, putting anything that does matter in the car, hi-f-, music booze type stuff,. Alternately buy a van.
