Just a quick question, how many WAM members have a room dedicated purely to audio,

a room where you can place equipment anywhere you choose to maximise SQ.

For those that have to 'share' ,how many actual positions are there available for you to position your loudspeakers.

I expect you all have doors, fireplaces ,thoroughfares etc ,so how many places can you realistically site your equipment.

Thanks in advance,

Keith.

1. No room dedicated to audio. Two rooms where some sort of 'proper audio' system exists (there are audio systems in the kitchen, bedroom1/bathroom, bedroom2, workshop and car but I'm not counting these).

2. Proper audio room 1 (living room): realistically only one general area to place speakers. Can't site them there more than 30-40cm from rear wall (apart from French windows only entrance door is in the side wall and walkway passes across the room in front of the speakers). Can't place them within about 75cm of the side walls (other stuff would get in their way). Current speakers there are NS-1000s although I have used ESL57s in the past. Although the placing was far from ideal the ESLs' redeeming features made the experience worthwhile.

3. Proper audio room 2 (study): contains a lot of furniture (wall-hung bookshelves, desk, sofa, chair, cabinets etc). Once the general layout is decided there will once again be only one place within it for the speakers. They need to be compact and probably restricted to sitting on desk/bookshelves. Preferred speakers in there are JR-149s.

The older the house, the more complex the room shape will be, and the fewer likely positions for speakers.

Maybe you might also ask about old vs new homes. That's not to say that old is worse, in fact, IMO, the opposite, since fireplaces, bay windows, alcoves etc may be helpful if used to break up reflections.

I kind of have a dedicated room. It has a fireplace, a bay window, a door each end (double door one end in fact) a built in bookshelf and an alcove. It's a bugger, but there is really only one place to site the speakers. Luckily, they sound ok there, tho I have an upper bass hump I think.

I'm working on it! At present I have a leg of an L-shaped room which is mine, all mine. Plan - not to scale - showing 'my' bit at the top.

The diamond shapes indicate speaker position.

This is what it looks like from where I sit:

I'm rebuilding the 2A3 monos which will sit on the floor next to the speakers, making room for the TT on top of the unit. Incidentally, I could barely move that unit when empty, so full of vinyl it must weigh about half a ton. Thank heavens for concrete floors... (Does that mean my kit is coupled, or decoupled from the floor? ;-) )

Sounds pretty good, and I have the flexibility to make some changes as I see fit.

Thanks Chaps, age of house might well be a factor, here although I can pretty much do as I want , there is still only probably two positions for the speakers,.

I have a dedicated, soundproofed, acoustically treated, listening room.

Roughly 25' X 15' X 9' Heavy carpet, over heavy underlay, over concrete.

Dense concrete block walls, rendered and plastered, covered with acoustic panels.

Ceiling is three layers of plasterboard, different thicknesses, and orientation, with a foot of dense insulation, above.

The room is free standing, inside an old barn.

Because of the way the room is constructed, I can only use the room in one orientation.

Both side walls are bowed inwards, as is the back wall, and the ceiling is, as well. The only flat wall, is the end where the speakers reside.

Free standing units across the back wall, that hold CDs and records.

Door is roughly in the middle of one side.

I used to but not now. Garage conversion. 3/4 went to a tune room kept the other 1/4 for treasure. Seemed to work fine but just meant I couldn't use anything too big. Ran an Arcam 8/8p combo into mission 732s and the room was carpeted, plasterboard walled and had a comfy settee and recliner in it.

Would love another.

My speakers work well about a foot off the long wall & about 7' apart in 15' x 10' listening room/lounge,

which is handy as there's nowhere else to really put them!

House is timber framed with suspended chipboard floors & there are no particular acoustic treatments to the room.

Own dedicated room - course I'd like a bigger one but my set up sounds just fine in there for the sound I want to achieve and to demo to others what my system can do.

The lounge in my fairly moden house really only has one portion that works - although the speakers can come away from the back wall a few feet.

Thanks forthe replies everyone, it does seem that even if you have a dedicated room there are only at best a few possible locations for loudspeakers.

I am thinking of buying an XTZ analyser, ( or something similar) perhaps we could arrange for it to be passed on from Wammer to Wammer?

Rooms do make a huge differenc to SQ, and knowing the exact nature of the problem is the first step to rectifying and better Sound.

Keith.

Gregg Hi, that is very kind of you, I use the Trinnov to measure and correct here, but it is just a little too large and expensive to ship around, I really belive the XTZ could bring a really positive benefit to many systems.

I have a dedicated room - 25 feet by 17 feet, but trapezoid shaped. Only one logical position for my speakers due to doors, French door, bay window etc.
