Take my hand and lead me gently through Rush. I've never really moved beyond Fly by Night and 2112. What should I check I out?

Classic prog rock Rush = 2112, Hemispheres, Farewell to Kings

Not such a fan of newer keyboard Rush but Moving Pictures and Signals are worth a listen.

The Holy Trinity are Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, and Signals. All are Rush at their very best.

Saw a great laser show at London Planetarium choreographed to Signals back in 82 or 83.

Moving Pictures is my favourite.

They're a bit of an odd band, aren't they? Naff but charismatic? :p I can never quite decide how much I like them. A few songs from Fly by Night crop up regularly on playlists and I do like at least the title track from 2112. The bass playing and drumming are consistently impressive it seems

I'd go for 'Permanent Waves' or 'Moving Pictures'. Their very first eponymous album (pre Neil Peart) is a good (and less prog) listen also.

For me, Rush's saving grace is that they wrote lots of catchy songs. Equal parts pompous, epic and catchy. A decently enjoyable mix. Here's a goodie.

I have all their albums and there is a distinct progression (see what I did there ;-) ) right up until Power Windows. It then goes a bit flat but comes back with a Vapour Trails and the following albums, Snakes & Arrows and Clockwork Angels really are a return to form.

Each album has a distinct Rush sound but are noticably different. You could cherry pick any album and love or hate it. There are some I listen to more than others (in no particular order) A Farewell To Kings, 2112, Clockwork Angels, Moving Pictures and Hemispheres are always repeated while the others I dip into from time to time.

If you want a taster then Rush Chronicles has a good spread of tracks right up to Presto. Or try the Retrospective series, although to get a cross section, you really need to get all 3 volumes which is a bit pointless.

So would you say they are more a 'song' or 'album' kind of band. I've always presumed they were the latter because of the prog aspect but find myself dipping into the few albums I know to listen to a few choice songs. I do like that song you posted there.

Many of the 80's albums have a strong use of keyboards but this changed in the 90's with Counterparts

& then Test For Echo which are more guitar orientated & are superb albums IMO.

There's no duffer in Rush's entire catalogue but as said before Permanent Waves & Moving Pictures

are strongly recommended.

I'd call them an 'album' band.

I get the impression their hardcore fans are more into albums and will have strong preferences on their best albums. For me, I tend to like individual songs. I'm not so "into" certain albums by them. I tend to prefer their 1980-ish keyboard period. It has this sort of epic feel. But not in a 70s prog way, it's sharp and shiny, like an 80s suit.

And '85's Power Windows from the Keyboard era is a wonderfully powerful & melodic album.

Even my little sister liked it & she was a Wham & Durany white stilleto wearing type.

Big money got a mean streak

Big money got no soul...

If you like Fly By Night, with the prog type stuff (By-Tor etc) then why not push on in chronological order? Caress of Steel follows well from Fly By Night, and Hemispheres and Farewell to Kings follow from 2112.

All great albums, and if you like them, there is a whole discography to explore after - but jumping from your early stuff straight to "Presto" or "Clockwork Angels" will be very disconcerting!

I audition speakers with the opening bars of Manhattan Project. Masses of deep gutteral bass rumbling along. If they do that well, they are in the system :^

Tom Sawyer and Spirit of the Radio (of course), The Weapon, Countdown, Time Stand Still (with the wonderful Aimee Mann), Distant Early Warning and pretty much anything from Grace Under Pressure, Emotion Detector, Open Secrets. Just a few of their really good songs. Get Spotifying... I uused to think I didn't like Rush till I decided to listen to a few albums on Spotify.
