Selekt DSM issues after Organik Upgrade

I did not follow my own advice to never give Linn another dime and spent another 5k the Organik and Utopik upgrade.

It sounds amazing! It is a lot of cash but I really love the results.

The issue though: since upgrading I sometimes have another iteration of the "no sound issue" I had before.
It happens when turning the SELEKT on. The boot up takes longer than usual. Then it either remains in the "display off, volume knob fully illuminated"-stage or boots up "as normal" but has no sound coming out of the speakers. Maybe it would always get to the latter stage in the end but I do not have the patience to wait for more than 10 minutes or so. Then I can interact with it via Roon or the Linn app and queue music, switch inputs and so on. But no audio no matter the source.

To solve the issue, I then dance around the device hitting all available switches and pulling all available cables (incl. power) for 15 minutes or so until finally, it boots up again and theres sound coming out of the speakers. No idea what actually solves the issue in the end, though.

Anyone experiencing anything similar?

Has the issue been raised with Linn?

Not yet. The Linn support has been far from helpful ever since I got the Selekt and started having issues.

If no one knows the issue here I will contact my dealer next. Though that only meant taking the longer route to Linn support for most issues so far.

That’s why I am a bit disappointed in myself. It took years to get to a somewhat stable device and the best idea that came to my mind is spending more cash for new parts that mess that up 😂

It sounds brilliant, though!

Your dealer should, of course, be kept in the loop in case there is an issue covered under warranty. However, I’d always flag an issue directly with Linn using the “Report a problem” feature in either the Linn app or Kazoo. That way they can check the logs produced by your DSM to see what it’s doing.

Are we getting to the stage that Linn are just getting too complicated for their own good ? I await the "Dansette Revival" when you put a bit of plastic on a rod, press a button and the music starts every time.

Possible early Utopik issue? Go onto Konfig and check the details of the Utopik Power Supply in ‘About’ in your Selekt. Check in the Board Types listed below, the Utopik board is the 5th one listed from the top on our machine. If the serial number ends in R2 rather than R3 then it’s an earlier model and can be affected by the cold and refuse to turn on fully below a certain temperature. I don’t remember the exact temperature but your dealer may know. A replacement Utopik board ending R3 should solve the issue. Contact your dealer to arrange a replacement board. If not this issue then I’m stumped.

The number ist ******80L1R3 - so that should not be the issue. Though it would have been interesting to learn about the temperature I have to maintain in my living room for the SELEKT to be comfortable 🙃 .

Linn responded in the meantime and advised me to use the fallback button in Konfig in order to get sound out of the speakers again.

Though it is not clear if that's a one time thing or has to be done every time the issue occurs (I suspect the latter - my wife will be thrilled to learn a new software in order to watch TV...).

I will try that, see if it works and seriously hope the 'solution' isn't to do that every time the issue occurs.

And that was quicker than I thought: the SELEKT froze again this morning. And while it seems dead when that happens initially, KONFIG can still see the device and the "Fallback/ Restore"-process works.

I would like Linn either to confirm that this is a solution for the underlying problem or at least that they know the cause and will fix it. But that's the kind of information neither my dealer nor I have been getting from them over the years.

I'm sorry to hear things like that.

This is also why I'm investigating a route to separate the streamer from the rest of my system: a budget network transport (Node; Primare NP5, Wiim ...) into an analogue pre with a dac module (Exposure XM?) could be the right (and cheapest) way.

Vinyl are my primary source though.

BTW, in the last few years Linn has almost lost my trust (forum closed; insulting pricing; poor costumer support; no analogue preamp; confusing line products ...).

The Radikal 2 could be my last ever upgrade with them (but I'm not yet 100% convinced to pull the trigger on it).

I would update Linn on what has happened, since you are now in direct conversation with them. Since Fallback does clear the issue, it does sound like it’s a firmware issue, so a solution should be in the works.

They replied already: it is supposed to be a solution for the issue (since the fallback button seems more like a one-size-fits-all approach for 1st level support I have my doubts). If not I have to contact my dealer to have the unit checked. And that would be exactly the process I am trying to avoid. He would try his best to swap parts/ units for what is more likely a software issue. And the process would take months.

I’m in a similar boat with my older selekt classic. There are few things I have tried but it will be going back for a warranty check soon. Feel free to pm me and let’s chat.

So it worked for a whole week. The SELEKT has been working fine until is hasn't.

This morning there again was no audio coming out of the speakers. The annoying but at least straight forward way using Fallback/ Restore in Konfig did not work initially. Why, I do not know but the SELEKT did not seem to respond like I expected it to. However after a few tries it finally restored (the 5 step process) and there was sound again.

I am NOT looking forward to the following "support process" AT ALL. I absolutely do not believe this can be a hardware issue.

I was at volume 60 yesterday when I received a phone call and hit the mute button. I can still hear faint sound from the Akubariks. This never happened with the adsm

I expect that is normal. Mute reduces the volume by a number of dB, it doesn‘t kill it completely.

So, I told Linn that the 'fix' only lasted a week and they replied that actually they forgot to tell me about the last step of the fix: hitting the power switch in the back, restarting the SELEKT and then selecting my speakers in the Konfig software (they were gone after the restart, but not when I did the fallback/ restore the first time).

It only took a few days for the initial issue (no sound) to appear again and I today tried the fix including the added steps.

We'll see how long that helps.

So has the issue creeped up again. Linn forgot to tel me that final step (restart after restore) as well

So far: no.

And another positive aspect is that boot up including the time it took for sound to come out of the speakers when using the HDMI input feels faster now. Before, it took ages until I could finally hear the TV sound out of the speakers.

It sounded too good to be true...and it was. No sound again out of my SELEKT. But this time it happened WHILE I was actually using it. The times before it was right during start up when the device got stuck / no sound came out.

I had a few weird issues the last few days but I could never clearly tell if its the source (Apple TV in those cases). Today it clearly was the same issue with the SELEKT as before it just happened during playback rather than startup.

I tried playing other sources, as well. But it's the same as before. Once sound stops, nothing helps but using the Fallback option. Though this time that did not work as expected either as I had to manually reboot the SELEKT and afterwards was not presented the restore option and my speakers were still showing in the Konfig/ Speakers section.

No idea what to do now. In my opinion there is no possibility this is caused by hardware faults but LINN told me to contact my dealer next. And the only thing he can do is replace stuff...
