I'm not saying that hi-fi does spontaneously combust, I am merely asking if you think it should?

Perhaps you might like the anticipation of waiting to see, say, your amp' explode one day and this may make listening to your hi-fi more exciting and challenging.

Or perhaps you might think it would be very dangerous and potentially lethal so not really a good idea.

PS This isa ONE DAY poll! No, I'm not joking. You have just ONE DAY to vote on this poll. Now, for heaven's sake, vote as you have literally just hours left...

^ Yeah, that's as maybe, but we weren't given that option: so, as a general principle, NO!

Many many moons ago, I built a maplins millenium 4-20 valve amp. I even paid extra for another psu so I could run them as monoblocks. The build went fine, and indeed the amp sounded great, but the transformers got pretty damn toasty...

4 hours into the initial listening sesh of my virginal shiny valve amp I glanced over at my new pride and joy...and there was smoke pouring out of the mains transformer of one channel. I pulled the plug and had a good cry.

Upon inspection, there was a nasty gooey mess inside the case under the mains transformer.... I carried it back to mr maplins, who kindly shipped it off to god knows where for post mortem.

A couple of weeks later, went to see the manager and he said that it looked like a one off faulty transformer. Apparently my build had been fine, nothing I had done (or not done) had killed it, so they gave me another transformer, patted me on the head and wished me luck.

So I rebuilt it.... you can tell where this is heading cant you... well you're wrong. The OTHER channel amp died of a mysterious "fuk it ,I dont want to play anymore" type illness. So I sent it to the specialist repair centre that is my dustbin, but the taste for valves had infected me, and eventually led me to the glasshouse 300b SET amp I now enjoy. So maybe combustable hifi WAS a good thing, in my case.

No. It bloody should not.

A preamp of mine once had a power supply capacitor literally explode as it was playing. One fucked loudspeaker, lots of smoke and a smell like you wouldn't believe... so it's a bit of a sore point.
