Long Story. Short version.

I bought a Garrard 401, and it came with an SME 3009 arm with removeable headshell. On there is a Shure 75ED cartridge, with no cantilever/stylus.

It was of no interest to me. But, now I have bought a plinth for the Garrard and it came with 3 armboards. One each for a 3009 and a 3012, together with a blank (which I will be using eventually). It would be nice to try the SMEs on the Garrard.

The attraction of using this is that the cartridge is already set up on the headshell. So, it would just be a case of slotting in a new cantilever.

A quick look on eBay shows many on offer.

The question is, am I wasting time. ie is the Shure crap, and just not worth the effort?

If worth the effort, are all of these (cheap) cantilevers much of a muchness?

Brian - the Shure M75 is certainly not crap, but it is not their top model by any means. With a good stylus it is capable of very good results - I think there is even a JICO SAS stylus available for it (I could be wrong).

Definitely worth trying out with a reasonable stylus.

John and Graham, thanks.

Before you both posted, I had received a Pm suggesting the same Jico SAS idea, so will have a look at that.

Thanks to the 3 of you for your help
