Having been astonished via analogue radio - even pre-best FM in about 1972 - by this sort of thing, have been following recent BBC Radio 3/better FM transmission, and have nothing to say bar that analogue memories are probably musically-actually superior.

1-0.

For a more modern recording by a native French singer, Véronique Gens and the Orchesra national de Lille could well be worth a punt.

I certainly like Kiri's, but for me the best remains Victoria de los Angeles which I was brought up with.
By far the most wonderful version. Baïlèro always makes me well up. I often stare at the record sleeve & imaging I live in that little French hamlet & that makes me well up as well!

The Netania Davrath versions are really enjoyable, and yes they are folk songs, but arrangments. And Victoria is not an abomination!

Here is something I think we can all agree is truly an abomination, sick bags at the ready;

It has its place.

In the toilet.

I actually enjoy the Davrath versions - very different of course.

And I own the Gomez also, so appreciate them also.

But the de los Angeles remains my favourite - and in answer to the abomination point, no I do not agree at all - Viuctoria was one of the first true crossover artists, before the term meant anything. Her zarzuela singing was world-class, up with any of the Spanish specialists. She was also, arguably of course, one of the finest operatic sopranos of her generation.

:)

y a t-il des personnes de l'auvergne ici?
... N'est pas que (qu') 'y sont-ils/elles' ...

Merci beaucoup pour 'input' ... shall soon check out recommended alternatives ...

I admit that pedantry including mine is bollox, apart from when top UK 16-yr-old exam-thang mark should be A or 1, not '9' ...

The de los Angeles version is wonderful, but I strongly recommend the complete set (Vol 1. & 2) by Dawn Upshaw and Kent Nagano for a more modern, but equally beautiful, approach. While I love her other work, the Veronique Gens version is quite weak by comparison.

Victoria de los Angeles for me also.
It was for me too until I heard the Netania Davrath recordings. Her crystal clear diction is far better than de los Angeles and apparently her pronunciation of Occitan is the most accurate. (She was fluent in eight languages.)

It really is a peerless recording.

Never heard of it. I was attracted by Chumpys title which somehow immediately raised memories of Occitan - the whole area holds a very special attraction for me.

As for the music - I'll be looking into it. Something to look forward to.
