Hello. Has anyone here made their own speaker stands? I want to make them out of sold wood and wondered what the best design would be? Cheers.

Design would depend on the speakers you were going to put on the stands. Some speaker designs go to great lengths to allow any vibration to exit the box as quickly as possible and if the speaker is one of those then the stand design should be sympathetic to the speaker and be as light as possible and allow any vibration to short to ground as quickly as possible . Other designs try to damp and contain any vibrations within the box and for those designs mass is often the best design option . So if you can identify the speaker perhaps people can help you more .

Thanks bencat. I have not decided on the speaker yet. Can you name a couple of examples of the speakers you refer to?

Harbeth are a classic example of a design that is stiff but light and tries to get rid of any vibrations as quickly as possible . This speake i my view does not like very heavy mass loaded stands and they smear the sound while things like Torlyte Stands works very well with them as they are in harmony with the design .

Most heavy speakers such as Linn , Naim , Proac and others are heavilly damped and seem to respond to mass loaded stands well . In truth it is always a suck it and see trial and error to establish what sounds best to you and what works best with your speakers in your room . Before you build any stands I would suggest it is essential to have the speakers you will use with them before deciding on a design . A light but stiff solid wood frame stand will work great with any light and stiff design speaker . A very think almost solid stand will work well with the heavily damped designs .
