Hi guys, James suggested I drop a message in here ...

I was wondering if any of you might be able to help point me in the right direction. Over the christmas period I lost my dad to illness and have subsequently been left with some stunning stereo equipment - a Gale GT2101 Glass turntable, Lecson AC1 PreAmp / AP1 Power Amp, Ensemble Profundo speakers and more.

I'm looking to find out some valuations for a lot of the items (for a mixture of insurance and sale purposes) and was wondering if there are any specialists / dealers amongst you who might be able to help / point me in the right direction.

Any recommendations of who to speak to would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Ollie

Hi Ollie

Sorry to hear about the loss of your Dad and wish you well as you come to terms with it and all that that means.

In terms of your HiFi, where abouts are you? Might be lucky to have a knowledgable type on your doorstep.

Cheers

Bob

Very sorry to hear about your dad, Ollie - a horrible thing to happen at any time but somewhow even worse at Christmas. My sincerest condolences to you and your family.

On the equipment front, however, my eye was caught my this...

a Gale GT2101 Glass turntable,
...and all I can say is WOW!

One of the rarest turntables ever - there's one for sale currently in a UK dealer and they're asking £7,990 for it. Now this may be a tad optimistic, (I've never seen another for sale before) but it gives you a rough idea of what to aim for.

Just as another reference on possible price for the Gale. I don't know how accurate the pricing in this article is, but it's another data point:

http://www.analogplanet.com/content/legendary-gale-gt-2101-appears-my-door

An organization called The Gale Audio Group is said to have located but fifteen of these turntables. The going price before the 2008 financial crash was said to be $5000, with $2500 the current market price if you can find one.
Condolences on your loss, Ollie.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. Much appreciated all the advice. I was always aware that the Gale was something special, but have been blown away by the speakers. Managed to get a reply out of Ensemble confirming that they would have cost 13,000 euros 20 years ago.

I'm not going to let the Gale out of my sight, but seeing he told me to try and sell the speakers, i'm going to do that. But first of all i'm going to continue delving into box to see what else is hidden away.

Will try and get some pictures.

Ollie sorry to hear your news. A Lecson pre/power recently went for £350 on ebeBay

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lecson-AC1-Pre-Amp-and-AP1-Power-Amp-/121179196689

Im not sure if that would be considered the typical market price but will give you some sort of inidication what to expect.
As mentioned, this is only an indication but it is important to note that that auciton listed a pre and power that hadnt been used for 20 years, seller "had no means of testing", and said he believed the power amp was ok but that there may be a problem with the pre.

Just something to bear in mind if you amps are in better nick.

Hey Ollie. Sorry for your loss.

We had a similar issue with furniture (bear with me...) last year when my Dad passed away. We were looking at selling the stuff until I had the epiphany that actually I should be keeping his classic old oak stuff & giving my cheep & cheerful MDF units the heave-oh.

So, given the comments so far (& I have no personal experience with this kit or knowledge of your own), should you maybe be looking at hanging onto your Dad's stuff & parting with some of your own?

Cheers

To me, it pretty much depends on the surroundings you are happy living with. Your dad is NOT an old oak cabinet. Your memories of him are far more important. Dump the real wood quality furniture and get with a bit of shit MDF. !!

Paint the oak furniture purple and pry open the joints with a crow bar, until its new age wobbly. Job done!

Ollie,

Really sorry to hear the sad news. He must have been a real enthusiast, as he picked some really unusual high quality pieces. I bet it sounds wonderful and must bring back many happy memories.

Best wishes,

Charlie
