Squeezebox Touch, Trivista DAC and FLAC

Been given a SBT after an office move left one spare - result!

Just wondering what the limiting piece of kit is in my chain regarding high resolution recordings? Is converting all my CD collection to FLAC overkill?

You certainly want to use flac with your kit - while the audible difference between flac and mp3 (at 320kbps) is small, you will never be quite sure - and storage is cheap.

Looks like you're completely good to go to me & have a nice enough system IMV......right through the chain I'd say......although I'm not a huge B&W speakers fan I quite like yours & think they're a fairly classy set of monitors. The SBT + a decent Dac makes for a very high quality digital source I used to run one in my main system & still have one in my bedroom system, pending a move to my Dads setup.

Ripping to Flac is exactly what you should be doing for best quality, so not at all overkill:nup:......all the 'Lossless' formats are much of a muchness in terms of SQ, but Flac is far superior to WAV fer tagging.

Re Hi Rez.......Funnily enough I was taking a squiz of a review of your Dac t'other day due to t' 'Billy Bargain' one that went on here t'other day.......was that you that got it BTW??

IIRC it has switchable upsampling at 96khz & 192khz.....so I'd be surprised if the receiver chip can't handle 24bit high rez & if it does (best check t' specs:^) I doubt you'd need to upgrade to a more modern Dac to enjoy any benefits of 'Hi-Rez' material. :stereo:

Sorry Chris, I was wondering if my DAC was up to the job of receiving high resolution but it sounds like I'm good to go.

It wasn't me who grabbed that bargain, I've had mine a while and it's had the full JS Audio treatment so it's pretty special now. Being a habitual modifier (cars, motorbikes, R/C toys....) I've done the Soundcheck Toolbox modifications and so far have only been able to use my GF's iTunes collection to demo it and I'm really taken by it and want to try embrace the whole streaming thing.

Lol....no need fer any apology Paul! :nup: I was just puzzled as yer seem to have a v nice system & I wasn't sure whether you were fishing fer upgrade advice here too....or simply asking whether your DAC could handle 'Hi-rez' which on you expanding a little seems to be t' case. :^
