I decided to pop my Unison Research Unico CD player back into the system.

It sound great , lots of detail but just a bit soft.

It's currently got a pair of Electro Harmonix installed.

Any suggestions on a valve that would make the bass more taught, faster, brighter?

Thanks.

I agree with the RCA's. Where my Mullards and Brimars sounded a little over-warm in an EE pre, some cleartop RCA's sounded bright, tight, and clear.

Anything other than current production EH.

Their 300Bs are excellent, their small signal tubes are, IME, universally shit.

For tight bass (but not bright) go for the NOS RFT. For bright and more detailed sound - Brimar 13D5 (it sounds difference to regular Brimars). Lot's of detail and precision - chrome plate Siemens. For euphoric sound - TJ Full Music. At least these are the results I got from tube rolling with a Unico Primo CDP.

I've replaced the EH 12AU7 gold pins in my Cayin with RCA clear tops and it made the sound more dynamic, better bass, better details and better clarity. So another vote for RCA clear tops.
