oddly carlisle tesco is where we go everytime if heading south...came across it because it's about 2 mins from MB main dealers where the wagon was being serviced.

M40 Junction 5 (Stokenchurch exit). Shell garage 2 minutes away.

2p per litre cheaper than anywhere in the area. Let alone motorway fuel.

That's a good one. I intend doing a supplement in the near future with a list of cheapish forecourts that aren't actually supermarkets. I might pinch that one.

There used to be a book called 'Just Off' which listed all the places to get fuel and refreshments within a couple of minutes of motorway junctions. I bought a copy back in 1996. Does anyone know if it still exists?

Shell Cribbs Causeway - just off the M5 at J17. Cheapest brand name station in the area.

For the penny-pinchers, Morrisons cribbs petrol is normally cheaper than Asda cribbs. But I worked out that the <5ppl difference between shell and supermarket petrol costs ~£2.50 every 500 miles - and my car runs better on shell. ;)

If you're about to head up the M1 from the M25, the Shell at Chiswell Green is less than half a mile off the motorway, and always cheap. J21a of the M25 or J6 of the M1 and head for St Albans.

:^ Yes, it's on my rat run from M25 to the A1 and I always plan to fill up if passing.

Also remember that some Tesco stations are actually Esso ...... there is a lot said about supermarket fuel, but no-one comments on fuel that has been stored too long. Also people worry about octane rating thinking it gives them extra performance - it does IF your car is set up to run such that lower octane fuel will be detrimental and cause pinking - however the energy measure for fuel is the calorific value - this doesn't appear on the pumps so people don't play 'top trumps' with this measure.

I have driven a 650bhp Evo which had to have 98 Octane as minimum and extra additives every 4th tank ..... but on a UK car designed to run on 95 octane (even a high performance model) - unless it has been tuned to run closer to the limitations of the fuel, then other than placebo, you won't get benefir from the higher octane rating. You may get benefit if that more expensive fuel ALSO has a different calorific value however.

All my cars run absolutely fine on a combination of the stations I pass - Shell or Tesco.

Disagree entirely. You spout bollocks IMO. In fact in this case, your description of HJ is more suited to yourself. :)

It's not about octane ratings, but addatives such as detergents in the fuel that help protect engine life. Going back in time, Shell was best (many tests done on wear and MPG showed a decent advantage to both with branded fuels) but not sen any recent results. I'm sure tho that Tesco will be buying whatever is cheapest. It may come from the same refinery that BP use, but what do BP add?

Care to point to the evidence, couldn't find any on Honest John's site. His assertion that most engine management issues were due to poor fuel was made entirely in his opinion, and he said as much. No evidence, just guess work then.

the biggest advance in engine life was acheived not via the fuel used or even addatives, but by better design and improved materials in engine construction.

My car's just cracked 100'000 miles on a diet of Tesco's finest and Asda's cheapest...not a sausage wrong with it. Hardly conclusive proof but I am so glad I didn't waste money on very well marketed snake oils sold to the gullable. :) I know that's spelt wrong as it looks too much like something associated with shite hawks.

What do BP add? I'm sure that if they really had higher QC or some better quality additives etc in their 'basic' fuels, they would be shouting from the rooftops about it. They keep those for the premium fuels, I suspect.
