Sitting..........did i spell that properly? on the lavatory, reading my hifi mags, which 'er indoors thinks is not the done thing, and was just recalling the ratio of weekly wage to my first proper system.

At that time, i was in my teens btw, and earned the princely sum of £7 per week !now,my system comprised a Thorens td 150, goldring g800 cart, Leak stereo 30 plus, and a pair of Wharfedale super lintons totalling about £160, meaning my systems value was 23 times what i earned weekly.

Now without revealing what i earn now,the comparative "value" of my current set up is much less in terms of wage to kit ratio, and to emulate that ratio, would be up in the tens of thousands of pounds.

Useless gabble i know, but i wonder what sort of wage/kit value ratio other members are on? For example, if i earned £500 a week, my kit now should be kicking in at £11,500, which on the stereo side only, its nowhere near.

Did i think more of hifi back then to warrant that ratio?..............

On that basis I spent £1500 in 1984. Can't remember what wages were but the max we borrowed on a mortgage was £16400 to buy our first house.

On that basis its under 10% of your house value which is still roughly correct in 2006

By the way we live in a cardboard box under the M6 flyover (enter the four Yorkshire men scetch and continue ad naseum)

Its the number of times you've changed in comparison to how far you've gone! I do the same though - its just fun to hear different things - only, if you have the means to upgrade seriously - why not?

15X weekly wage at present..or three and a half months labour, no food etc. My first system was also basd on a TD150 but with grado cart/Rogers Ravensbrook amp and Wharefdale unit 4 kit speakers, but have no memory of the cost...that was 1973!

I used to work 7 days a weekand take home very simlarmoney about 5 - 6 years ago , what a shattering grind it was. I used to average 70 hrs per week .

Now earning much less and doing a lot, lot less hours ( i only work 3 - 4 days a week now ) Much happier. Money isn't everythig...

Duvet ,

You probably made more in your tea break than your system costs.

dead right sid and coke thats why we up sticks and left the uk. i was getting to old to keep up the pace. money is certainly not everything but it gives you more choices in your life. any way i've done my stint and now i only do 4 or 5 days aweek and never weekends. unless a nice cash job comes in.
