Which model TDL?

I think Keith (MF1000) uses transmission lines with Fostex supertweeters, which went down well at Scalford..

I had a pair of 'clone' IMF TLS 80's....sold them to hifinutter and they sound fantastic on his Leak Stereo 20.

I now run some custom built Cambridge R50 transmission lines as dedicated bass units ...they go down to around 20Hz. They are partnered with some Castle Chesters which are two way transmission lines, and I run some fostex super tweeters to beef up the top end response.

If your ever this way or even want to make a trip up your more than welcome to listen to my set up Phillip

The TDL Studio range were excellent loudspeakers.

I ran Studio 1s for a few years and a friend had the much larger Reference model which IIRC is the version referred to here with the super tweeter.

Wonderfully clean and effortless, and not as tricky to drive as the old IMF designs.

If these are in good condition they'll be very hard to beat today.

So is that the RTL3?
No. The RTL range were later, much more cheaply engineered speakers. The Studio range and the Reference were 'proper' TDL's and are much better in all areas.

I've never heard a pair of TDL Reference ....but they are the stuff of legends by all accounts, and even today would be over £2000 if you ever see a pair for sale. Bass wise they go down to 16Hz !!

There is a guy on the net doing a blog of building a replica pair but he hasn't updated for a while

As regards to older IMF's being tricky to drive ....my 'clone' TLS 80's are running well on a Leak Stereo 20 classic valve power amp

Yes, not much makes the trousers flap more spectacularly than a big TDL or IMF.

My friend's Reference model was actually used in a bedroom running from a Musical Fidelity MVT and P270.

They worked amazingly well in such a tiny room. IIRC a pair of Radford MA15s was also sounding great with them.

The tricky drive thing was limited to a particular edition of IMF models, but is mostly a sensitivity thing. Some IMFs were down at 80dbw which really takes some pushing to go loud.

I had several pairs of tdl's when i was a anti social student, starting cheap with rtl 3's then getting some studio 0.5 , drove them with a stack of meridian , boothroyd kit, rocked like drunken roadies, really fun .

Have IMF 80 inspired speakers, love them:)

Very good balance, very good bass depth. They come alive at very low volumes, setting them apart from many bextrene coned speakers, and they keep sounding the same up to high volumes. They do need power, my 60W Cambridge P500 runs out of steam in the living room. A Sansui BA-F1 copes better. Between 100 and 200 Hz the impedance dips and that in combinations with phase angles probably is quite demanding.

Had a pair of IMF TLS 50 mk 2's, way back in the 80's, seriously miss them.
I too had a pair of TSL50 II in the 70s. They are the only past loudspeakers I wish I still had although still would have nowhere for them to work properly as they had to be backed against a wall for the bass to shine. Needed serious amounts of power too in the days when a 50 watt amp was big!

Brought a smile to my face just thinking about them again.
