I'll be avoiding this one like the plag-u.I've seen a couple of other "comedies" with Simon Pegg and both they and he were dire. I actually had to switch off Hot Fuzz. I actually thought he did a decent Scotty in Star Trek whereas I've seen negative comments here about his role there. I thought he was good.

Sacha Baron Cohen and Chris Morris made good comedy films. They were clever and funny. That's more like it. If you want dumb-ass stuff, Pegg's movies just aren't funny , but rather, go and watch Dumb and Dumber , the king of dumb-ass comedy.
Bloody hell!

You’re wrong about this as well as Dr Who - see the cockpunch thread in the pub car park.

Shaun of the Dead is really good. Hot Fuzz is excellent!

I admit that a few of Simon Pegg films don’t do it for me i.e. Run Fatboy Run, How to Lose Friends and Alienate People and Paul. I think that’s more of a fault of the material than Pegg himself though.

And Pegg’s Scotty was clearly the worst thing about the rebooted Star Trek; though he wasn’t quite so bad in the second reboot…

Did you ever watch Spaced? I bet you don't like that either... :nup:

Simon Pegg was excellent in Spaced, and Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz were amazing.

Anything else he has done has been poor = Mission Impossible, Star Trek etc.

I think he needs Nick Frost and Edgar Wright/Nira Park to give of his best.

I think you're right.

And The World's End is directed by Edgar Wright; so I'm hoping it will be up there with Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.

Paul- now that is one funny film:^.
Yes paul was excellent.
I wanted to like Paul. It looked like it was going to be one of those films that pressed all the right buttons for me; but I didn't like it at all. It was just to contrived. Yes, some bits are funny, but mostly it isn't.

I think a large part of the fact that I didn't enjoy it was due to Seth Rogen's really fucking irritating voice. I can't stand Seth Rogen. I find him talentless and unfunny and everytime I hear his voice; it drives me crazy :x

He's certainly the worst 'actor' alive today and very likely the worst ever. I do not know why he still gets work after the abomination that is The Green Hornet.

Paul for me was a huge disapointment; a wasted opportunity. Frankly there is far more humour to be found by watching an old episode of Alf. That series got the whole 'Alien on Earth' concept right years before.

Here's a brief clip especially for Cloffo:

Hot Fuzz was brilliant but maybe you have to be from the West Country to appreciate all the jokes / refrences.

I used to buy my sweets & copies of the NME from the newsagents featured in the film, but for some strange reason they changed the sign on it for the film but I think the fake name is still there now. Edgar Wright is actually from Wells and even included his old drama teacher in a scene.

Hott Fuzz was not even close to being mildly amusing, let alone funny.

Shaun of the Dead OTOH, was hilarious and wonderful.

You actually need to be from Gloucester, aged around 43/44, and ideally in the police force, to get most of the references in Hot Fuzz. Examples:

"Sandford" is the name of the fictitous town used by police training centres

"The Citizen" is the name of Gloucester's local paper (and the reference to it becoming like a tabloid in Hot Fuzz was bang-on)

The obsession with Cornettos is because the Unilever ice-cream factory is a big local employer, where they make Walls-branded ice-cream. It's real name, as any Gloucester resident will tell you, is "Wallses"... as in "Where do you work?" "Wallses"

I went to school with Simon Pegg (he was in the year below me), and we had a fair few mutual friends, reading his book took me right back to schooldays, strange seeing my friends names mentioned (one of whom is one of my best mates these days).

If a movie relies on you getting references based on you living in a small part of a small country then thats a pretty epic failure.

OTOH I thought it was an entertaining film but certainly nowhere near as good as Shaun of the dead.

Hot Fuzz didn't rely on people getting local references; it was still a great film even if (like me) you are not familiar with that part of the world.

For those who say that Shaun of the Dead is great; but Hot Fuzz is rubbish. Well; I could agree with you; but then we'd all be wrong. :p

So I'll just repeat what I said earlier:

Shaun of the Dead is really good. Hot Fuzz is excellent!

It doesn't rely on them, they are just side jokes that those in the know will get, Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz are both great films in their own right. Neither, however, are as funny as 'Malcolm' or 'Restless Natives'.

Ah, either you've misunderstood me or I didn't make it clear - I meant that if the references relied on you being from Gloucstershire to get them, then that seems odd to me. I didn't mean that the movie relied on those references to carry it. In fact I quite enjoyed it and don't feel I missed out on anything due to me not "getting" those references.
