Having owned a few pairs of the traditional Tannoy range (Stirling & Turnberry) I’ve recently had my eye on a pair of these TD8 on eBay, from Elite Audio.

Does anyone have experience of these speakers that they can share? Strengths, weaknesses, positioning etc.

They would be used in my pretty normal living space (11’ x 15’) playing down the length of the room, roughly 6’ apart and a foot out from a bay window.

Thanks.

Tannoy was owned by the same people as Goodmans when I worked at Goodmans, and they loaned us a pair of TD12s as a reference for our listening room. The styling divided us but I personally thought they looked fantastic - I loved the velvet trim and the bizarre ‘rubber band‘ grilles!

All of the engineers were unanimous on their sound, though. None of us liked them…

In what way did they not sound good? I've never heard a pair but have always assumed they would sound good as they look so well engineered, and it's Tannoy for heaven's sake!!

They just sounded like…....well…….Tannoys only more so! Our listening rooom was a bit lively in the midband and, combined with the natural ‘exuberance’ of a Tannoy in the same area, we all just found them shouty and harsh.

To provide balance, a friend of mine is a lifelong Tannoy fan and ran TD12s for years. He then dabbled with a pair of Westminster Royals but decided he preferred the TD12s!
