To repair or not repair? That is the question.

Hi all, Received a phone call from a friend last night asking me to look at his system as he didn't think it sounded right. Indeed it didn't. You can see why in attached photo. His choice now is whether to pay the hundred or so pounds for new bass/mid drivers or purchase a new pair of speakers. His budget is no more than £200 so I was wondering if there would be any at that price that would be better or equal to the Heybrook's quality. We did also consider the re-foaming kits but neither of us are confident enough to carry this out.

Any thoughts or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

The Puresound supplied units look the best and quickest option. Perhaps PM him as he does post a lot on the Wam as he may be able to do something for you.

Fix.

Repair.

You will not get the same quality for the price IMHO, bar a stroke of incredible good fortune.

Genuinely really nice-sounding speakers and well worth sporting out (probably significantly under budget).

Don't let good things go to waste.

£16 for a pair of foam surrounds - I'd repair them (I have done 3 pairs and it isn't difficult).

If a bit of diy fails, the cost of surrounds and then new drivers is still within budget.

The thing about diy, in many areas, is just having the confidence, reading around the subject to get an understanding of the pitfalls and then having a go. This is not life threatening stuff either.

Yup. Had a pair a few years ago as a 'stop gap'. They were at least as good as what they were supposed to be a stand-in for.

Damned good sounding. The ultimate? Of course not, but great dynamics and a lovely lively sound.

Fix the buggers. Anything else is a real waste.

No brainer. repair.

I had new drive units from Guy at Puresound for my JPWs ( same drivers ). Then made the mistake of letting them go. Got them back now and won't be parting with them.

Been through a number of replacements now and although i've had better speakers , i've had to spend a lot more than £200 to better them.

UPDATE: Have just removed both drivers and there seems to be what looks like salt crystals on the 'spider' which makes me think new drivers would be a better bet than a re-foam kit. Rest of the cabinet, crossover, tweeters and filler look ok. Could dampness have caused this I wonder.

Thanks for the feedback by the way.

Have a close look with a magnifier if you can. I have found many weird things inside speakers and electronics. Old spiders eggs and things!!! (no spider joke intended)

On looking closer the deposit is more on the speaker frame than the spider. No signs of creepy crawlies Martin. (dead or alive) Phew!!
Aluminium alloy frame (basket)?, if so, not really surprising and of little concern. Just get a meths dampened lintfree rag and wipe it off.

Will give it a go. Thanks for that. Nothing ventured, nothing gained as they say.

Have a look at the extensive youtube footage on re-foaming. I've watched a few, and would confidently have a go. Shim the coil right and your laughing.

Oh and to clean the spider, if necessary, depending upon contamination, if bad it's meths again but using a cotton bud, gently, with speed though.

If not bad, a clean, fine, artist's paintbrush.
