Just heard from a mate that tenor sax playerTommy Whittle passed away earlier this week. Very sad news.
He was born in Scotland, but left there in his teens to follow his musical dreams, in London. He played with everybody over the next 50/60 years. EVERYBODY.
Really great sound and relaxed time feel. I thought he was great.
I met him once when I was younger at the Edinburgh Jazz Festival. I went up to him with the usual stuff .." what sax, what mouthpiece, what to practice etc etc. He was great to me and took the time to answer all my silly questions.
Very sad this evening.
Here is a You tube recording. Check out his solo. Lovely.
