Hi, I really don't have the budget to do this seriously but I have loads of my parents old vinyl and want to hear it through my system rather then their all-in-one affair.

I can't spend over £50 and I've seen a marantz tt1200 on the bay nearby me, worth it?

Anyone any comments/alternatives?

or am I better just leaving it until I can spend at least 200?

Excellent advice, thanks all, its appreciated.

yes, believe me, I've looked at that! Is the pro-ject better than the similar priced Regas?

It'll have to wait, hopefully not too long.

You won't go far wrong with a Pro-ject or a Rega, Not sure if Rega bundle their entry level TTs with their own carts.

I am not a huge fan of Rega carts though I have nothing but respect for the company and own one of their CD players.

If you are going down the 50 quid road, then a Pioneer DD like a PL220 may be an option although second hand turntables of that vintage need a bit of nerve to buy.

The Rega RP-1 comes bundled with the same cartridge. Shop around for a deal and buy whichever you find cheaper. You won't find huge differences between the two as far as sound goes.

I've had both and loved both. To be honest much the same. I'd look to see which cart comes bundled. As Tel says, the Rega carts are not to everyone's taste although the turn tables are extremely good.

Another vote for Pro Ject.

Save up and try for an Xpression MK1.

You get a better arm, Carbon Fibre, i used an Ortofon Tango M/C on mine.Which worked very well.

Spares are cheap as chips and there easy to fix.

As funds become available, replace the felt mat, a speed box is again a big improvement.

There is a MK 1 Xpression on the Bay as we speak, with P/P probably finish around a ton.

Come to think of it, my current turntable cost me £20. I picked it up at a junk shop when I was a student in around 1990. It's a Technics SL1810 with a Shure M91ED cart. It's had a tweak of the suspension, which was bottoming out, a new stylus, a quick tweak of the geometry using a protractor and it sounds quite presentable.

Clearly, I'm not seriously into vinyl but, I suspect like the OP, I have a small collection of my own and inherited vinyl and like having a capability to play it on something that isn't going to sound totally disgusting through a competent system. For many years it saw no use as I didn't have a phono stage, but having recently built one I've been pleasantly surprised.

Worth keeping an eye on eBay. You might find a bargain.

hi Ben

i'm just down the road to the east of Leeds. might have something that'll sort you out :)

got a couple of cheap tt's. a gemini pt6000 dd, and a hitachi HT324 belt drive. both sub £50 with mm carts that'll do for now perhaps.....

i have an AT-91e that can go on either for £30 if you can collect.

the Gemini is an SL1210 clone, but the lid is broken. works fine otherwise, and has RCA ports for your own cable, rather than a captive cable.

Looking at eBay, Pioneer PL-12Ds are selling for anywhere between £35 and £70. Find a decent one of these as your first step into vinyl and you won't go far wrong.

In addition to the decks mentioned above, keep an eye open for the Sansui SR222 and Trio KD1033.

Both pretty capable and with decent arms.

If you find a TT, send me a PM and I'll post you a cartridge FOC to get you going.

Depends on how big you record collection is (or is going to be) - no point spending loads on a turntable to play a hand full of vinyl (others will disagree).

Anyhow, if it helps I've a pro-ject 0.5 that is cheap (£25 if you collect), near to you (Otley) and in reasonable condition. I think I still have the box for it...let me know if you want me to dig it out of the loft/take photos etc...

The Sansui SR222 recommendation is a good'un if you can find one in good condition...you'd have to check availability of spare parts though.

To be fair, there isn't really much to go wrong on an SR-222!

Respect due. Good work Rob. :^

Now you are in with a chance. £50.00 without cart will find something usable.
