Hi I've set up my project debut III and i need a little advice. I have the tone arm balanced with downforce at 1.6 (cart orton 10). My issue is that the stylus has a tenancy to pick up 'gunk', for want of a better word, causing distortion. In some cases when i play some records there is more crackle than music. Purely through eyesight most of my vinyl looks ok, no major scratches etc. My question is, is this accumulation of gunk normal and what is the best way to clear it - avoiding damage.

Sorry if this sounds like a basic question, but i've not owned a turntable since 1986

Clean your vinyl :^

and, whatever anyone else may tell you, the only reliable way to do it is with a proper "wet/vacuum" RCM ;-)

If the records are dirty it WILL happen ALL the time

A cheap Record Cleaning Machine is needed ( if you dont want to spend upwards of £400 ) , some manual operated ones on eBay

wow very fast responses thanks, but what is the safest way to remove gunk from stylus, if it does accumulate?

oh yeah I have 10 artist sable paint brushes lying around the house, always wondered what to do with them hehe. Only joking, thanks for advice, just taking the piss. I do have a brush for cleaning keyboards though, that will do for now.

I use a small piece of Magic Eraser glued to a small metal disc. A 2p piece will do. Cleans the stylus beautifully if it ever gets dirty, which is rare using a Moth RCM.

To clean the stylus? Lick finger. Wipe stylus from back to front. Sorted. :^

think part of my problem is i've bought s**t vinyl. 2 thirds of the stuff i've bought has major crackle, some is not too bad, and the album i'm listening to now is almost perfect - housemartins hull 4 london 0. Oh and i've occidentally ordered brand new copy of portishead - dummy (should provide good comparison though )

just wash a crappy one in a bit of fairy and rinse and towel dry - leave it overnight and see if it crackles in the morning - or stick one in the dishwasher if you are feeling lazy

if the vinyl is shit this should improve it - if it does then get a cheapo or dear RCM - once you have cleaned the LPs just use the carbon brush to keep em clean
