I know you get what you pay for - but I'm trying to do lots of stuff at the moment so funds are (as usual) tighter than a sharks bum at 40 fathoms. I need to go from USB to SPDIF or Opti so I can run into the back of a Thule PR350B and flog my upgraded Beresford 7520 DAC - the Thule sounds better anyway, so it makes sense. There's a few things catching my eye on a well-known auction website that shall not be mentioned...

please pardon the links, oh modlyrators - does anyone have any experience of any of these bits of kit, or some recommendations for cost-effective solutions?

Heck, I'd even be interested if anyone's got summat to flog cheap :p , or would consider taking the Beresford (which has had the op-amp upgraded and has an upgraded power supply) in PX, cash either way. Drop me a PM if so. Something cheaper is definitely the way I want to go since I've still got to pay for the Thule, but anything within reason considered.

The Behringer UCA-202 is excellent. I also have an MF V-link (much more expensive) but I prefer the Behringer. It was also better than an M-Audio Transit.

If your using a desktop rather than a laptop. Most of the motherboards have pin outs on the board for a SPDIF header. But you don't get the header in the box. I got mine for about a tenner. Might be worth a look?

Edit: Come to think of it, I've got a Gigabyte one sitting in a draw. So If you've got a Gigabyte board I'll stick it in the post.

UCA 202 everytime. £20 from amazon! according to nuavguy it even measures well!
Indeed. I use the UCA202 as a DAC not just for USB-optical. I've installed a few at the radio statiokn for Presenters' laptops and they have been very reliable.

UCA 202! so good I have 2 of them in my PC setups to provide SPDIF toslink to a stereo digital amp & an AV amp. Also great as a nice little headphone amp you can adjust with the volume headphone dial on the hoof. Also sounds pretty decent to me as a USB DAC in its own write and feeding an anlg amp. (I also had a M-Audio Transit and the UCA 202 is if not equal then superior to the M-Audio device). Superior in that the anlg input/outputs are RCA!

Buy a UCA 202/222 try not to go over £20 when doing so.

Thank you all for the input - Smegger68 has offered me a free adaptor he bought in from China, but if it proves inadequate then I'll upgrade to the Behringer.

Sorry to hijack!

At the moment I have a HDMI cable running from my HTPC to the TV, then I have an optical cable run from the TV to my VA555ES. It does work fine, I even get AC3 passed over, but it doesn't allow for DTS and I get total cut out when scenes go quiet, which is distracting.

Is the UCA202 capable of doing "S/PDIF passthru" so I can get AC3/DTS on properly encoded movies?

Thanks in advance!

It's set to "Audio System" so it is effectively S/PDIF passthru (Dolby Digital 3/2.1) is passed to the amplifier, but it does not send DTS, so need another device to achieve this.

My last PC had an S/PDIF output on the rear, irritatingly this machine does not. Does the Behringer do S/PDIF passthru? Or shall I find out by burgling your house? :D

It doesn't - it is primarily designed as an interface to connect musical instruments to a PC for recording and mixing. Playback is just an afterthought.
