So they have the not so desirable original diaphragms - oh, I forgot they are just for looking at / investment. Can see it as much of an investment at that price though.

The "we assume" bit...

Give me a knackered pair or two singles that I get Mike to refurb properly any day.

People that pay thousands for a truffle are usually restrauteurs who'll make their money back 10 fold. Not much of a return to be made on these... As soon as you opened them they would be be worth the same as the 2 pairs he has sold already! Has the absurd new price of these pushed up the price of vintage ones? This guy is obviously a chancer but if he has sold a couple of pairs already he must have an idea that he can actually get the price.

Dear Bank manager,

I have decided to diversify my business and wish to put forward my proposal to bugger off to Italy with a highly trained pig for a prolonged period of snuffling. Sadly I have no pig or air fair how much can you lend?

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your request for a loan. Unfortunately it does not amount to what we would call 'a viable banking proposition'. Perhaps you might rummage around in your loft and see if there is any old rubbish there that you could sell to raise the air fare and the purchase price of a suitable porcine assistant ? Apparently unopened grubby cardboard boxes with the word Vitavox on the outside may well do the trick.

Faithfully,

VBanking

Barrow truffles are a local delicacy. The fungus goes from dark brown to white over a few days in the sun and the texture changes from soft to friable. I might collect some and export it down south where experienced diners could enjoy and appreciate.

I''ll have a word with the Parky and see if he can set me aside a couple of bags of the stuff.
