In a maket for my 1st 4x4, never use to agree with owning one unless have a good reason ie going off road! but we can change our mind :)

So basicly, Is it a good 4x4? Also consider Audio A7 (a bit too flash) or cayenne (too odd).

thx

They are all the same car, OB - just different styling and badges. I've driven the Q7 - truly massive, even harder to park than the Bentley. Despite this, not very roomy. Handling was bouncy - I'd expect the Porsche version to be stiffer and the VW soggier.

What about a Kia sportage or Mazda cx7 instead? The q7 is enormous albeit in 3ltr diesel guise it is quick. Porsche cayenne???? Why???? Urgh - buy a rangie and do it properly.

Oh, and they won't go off road. You need a Land Rover product for that.

Talking to an Audi rep at a motor event at Silverstone a few weeks back he fessed that the Q5 was in his opinion a "far better car to drive" than the Q7. And I agree with John the Q7 seems massive. And the VW and Porsche variants are so ugly - imo.

LOL the Q7 I drove had the 4.2 litre Diesel V10 - very fast, like driving an insane lorry!

And even for diesels they are very thirsty. The Range Rover is nicer true but the reliability figures are still not what a car of that price should be.

Shropshire Borders,
And not only that, but they're not 4x4s with any off-road ability at all.

A mate of mine traded in an Audi R8 (which was excellent unless you wanted to carry any passengers or luggage, or wanted to go anywhere that wasn't a perfectly flat road - he lived up a very rutted farm track so bits kept falling off) for a Q7.

Then it snowed and he couldn't get off his drive...

So in other words they're enormous, with poor fuel economy, poor handling on road and very little off-road ability... If you want on/off road get a Range Rover, if you want on road but 4x4 as well, get something else with the Audi Quattro haldex system like an All-Road or Skoda Octavia 4x4.

I was going to respond with the correct answer, but I see two eminently sensible gentlemen of the parish have got there before me...

buy a rangie and do it properly.
If you want on/off road get a Range Rover,

In the last 20 years I/we have had a S/W/B Pajero cheap & cheerful, 2.5 ltr diesel Kia Sorento with OME suspension, comfortable go anywhere but 17 mpg in traffic. Last year we ordered/bought a 2ltr Diesel Audi Q5 a great car very pleased with it one up on a 300 mile leisurely journey I managed 47mpg usually 44 mpg, we looked at the Q7 re getting in all of the grandchildren etc. so I spoke to a few owners, if like us you do more than 14000 miles a year you are looking at 4 new tyres @ £250 a corner every year & in london where'd you park.

The latest VW Touareg is a very good car the 3 ltr diesel gets up & goes well; MPG is reasonable. Indeed I have discovered that in the real world, the very similar engine in the Q5 gives better fuel consumption on a run than the 2 ltr, though not around London about 5 mpg less.

Large 4x4 vehicles are expensive to buy and very expensive to maintain. Unless you really need the capability or have vast amounts of dosh then I really wouldn't bother. I drive a 4x4 (2010 Defender) but only because I need to, I also have a runabout car for occasional motorway trips and I catch the train if I'm going bloody miles away. Those big road-based Tonka truck 4x4s are all style and very little substance IMO.

I live down a steep hill. In our street my neighbours have/have had a Q7, Q5 Cayenne, Freelander, Range Rover Sport and defender. I am the only one without a 4x4. During the last heavy snow falls the only vehicles which got up the hill in the snow were the Land Rover products and my Skoda Fabia with snow socks. Like others have said, if you are buying a 4x4 for the off-road capability I would be slow to go down the Cayenne/Q7/Toureg route. That said, I think the Toureg is the best looking of that trio and I can see the ttraction of them in a big car sort of way. I have never driven one and cannot say what they would be like to live with.

Aye, a Defender (or series if you're a proper masochist) bears very little resemblance to a car in terms of driving it - you need a whole new mindset! In terms of luxury type 4x4s I'd go for the Range Rover Evoque. It looks like an elephant's sat on it, but is nice to drive, comfy and has the dog turd spotting light under the doors. Not only that but it'll tow a 2 ton trailer up a muddy field (I've tried it in my neighbours one!).
