After Tusk and Shadows and Light, you’re probably hoping for some brevity from the album club this week.

Unfortunately, if this is the case, you are going to be disappointed because this album clocks in at 2 hours and 24 minutes long, although I am offering an abridged version as an alternative to the full 36 track triple album for those who haven’t got the time or inclination to listen to the whole thing.

Sandinista! Is The Clash’s follow up to the brilliant London Calling. I love both albums but they are very different from each other and it took me a long time to fully appreciate Sandinista! - you could call it a grower but it needs several years I would say.

Sandinista! is frankly a big sprawling mess of an album with tracks shooting back and forth between different musical styles including rap, rockabilly, reggae, calypso, gospel, dub, disco, punk, folk-punk and bizarrely, children singing covers of old Clash tunes. Not a dissimilar concept (apart from the kids singing) to the eclectic mixture of genres that Joe Strummer later played on his BBC radio show “London Calling”. The collision of musical styles is obviously intentional but it can be off-putting initially. Having said that, I now think it’s the reason I enjoy the album so much. I don’t ever seem to get bored by it.

I will warn you now that there are some tracks on the album that even I don’t particularly like (Mensforth Hill and the kids singing Guns of Brixton and Career Opportunities spring to mind). But there are loads of fantastic songs on the album if you take care to find them. You could even play the game where you create your personal favourite 12 track single album out of the triple vinyl or double cd full album. A bit like you can with the White Album!

As I said, you don’t have to listen to the whole album. CBS issued a very limited edition one LP version called Sandinista Now! which is much more immediate. There’s no filler and the running order of the tracks has been chosen so that they fit together better than on the full album. The track listing of Sandinista Now! is:-

Police on my back

Somebody got murdered

The call up

Washington bullets

Ivan meets GI Joe

Hitsville UK

Up in heaven (not only here)

The magnificent seven

The leader

Junco partner

One more time

The sound of sinners

If you only listen to the abridged version, please say so in your comments.

I will post links for grooveshark later. Can somebody please post a spotify link?

The Clash – Sandinista!

I bought most of the Clash albums but not this one. More out of duty than because I liked them. An important but overrated band in my opinion. Some great songs. Some not so great.

I'm vaguely recollecting that this album is something that tends to feature on the worst albums ever lists.... So an interesting WAC, at least!

I quite like The Clash and obviously, London Calling is a modern classic.

Haven't heard this one though, so looking forward to it.

Clash are a strange one for me.

Was far more into the pistols and other stuff.

Have owned this record a few times but have never managed listening to it all.

Must try and give it a listen.

I love The Clash (I own the US and UK variants), Give 'Em Enough Rope, London Calling and Combat Rock but Sandinista....hmm. It has a few good tracks but it just sounds like a collection of b-sides from their reggae period to me. I gave my copy to an ex, she loved it. :dunno:

Anal Cunt– Rancid Sucks (And The Clash Sucked Too) Lyrics

"Ska is gay, Reggae is gay

You're fucking gay and you're not punk

You say you hate corporations, but you were on NBC

London’s calling and they're calling you gay

[Chorus:]

Rancid sucks, Rancid sucks, Rancid sucks, and The Clash sucked too [x2]

If Kenny G had a Mohawk, he wouldn't be punk

If Yanni had dumb tattoos, he wouldn't be punk

If Garth Brooks pierced his nose, he wouldn't be punk

If Liberace sounded like The Clash, he wouldn't be punk

[Chorus]

You're gay, you suck [x6]

And The Clash sucked too"

I hate punk. Yep, I've said it again.

The Clash were part of that worthless, unskilled, shouty abomination of (so called) music. As such I never bothered with 'em, and can't say I have heard anything other than the stuff that gets played on the wireless.

I will, for the sake of WAC, give it a go.

underrated, sure there are a few that arnt as high up the tree as others. I love it when bands hit a peak and then go off on tangents. this is the clash at a tangent. Good WAC choice.

Discharge are punk. Clash most definitely aren't punk, but from the few tracks I listened to earlier on they do seem to be shite. That guys voice is fucking unbearable. It's a mock-punk dribbling slur...ugh horrible.

Did you expect it to be an underrated jewel?

I too think London Calling is pretty awesome, but have never been really grabbed by any of their other work. I have this playing now and certainly a curate's egg.

Surprised at the lack of love for Sandinista, to me it's like setting your ipod etc to random not every selection is great but the amount of cool surprises more than makes up for any disappointments.

As to it not being punk, that is the best thing about this LP, by the time of its release a lot of punk was derivative crap like Sham 69 etc. You can clearly hear the NY influence of early hip hop as well as The Clash's first love reggae & dub so a band not afraid to experiment in my book is something to be respected. When it was released it came at a bargain price much to CBS's dislike so as a hard up kid desperate for new music to me it was a revelation & helped to pass the time in my first terrible job.

Even now I still play it more regularly than London's Calling which has almost been over played.

Don't like the Clash, a pop/industry band. Plenty of real bands around that kick their ass musically, but the London press liked 'em, so they got famous.
Hmm, not so sure about that. Their first album was strong throughout and one of the best debuts ever. Their third, London Calling, is a terrific album too. Creatively they had far more in the bag than the Pistols ever did.

We'll be on page 2 in hours this week. Top WACing.

I had a brief skip through and my initial feeling is that Sandista could well be awful.
