Having read about welding glass used as a cheap version of a big stopper I took the plunge last night and ordered a couple of pieces from eBay. Total cost of the two pieces £1.98!

Has anyone else tried, and what was your verdict?

I'll update once they've arrived and I get a chance to use them.

Interesting, what shade did you order Rick?
I've forgotten :)

I think I went for grade 6 & 8. I've also ordered a couple of bits to make a filter adapter for my Oly 7-14 Pro. I'll then (if needed) try to cut the glass down to fit in a 100mm filter holder. If it works, I'll have made an adapter, have filter holder and two filters for £20.41 including delivery.

Had my first play with one of the two pieces of welding glass this evening (grade 8). I don't think I'll be able to get any good colour images out of it as the tint is too much, but black & white seem to be a goer. I think I'll need to try earlier in the day as it soon became unusable once the light started to fade. The exposures required took too long. For example, I got up to 5 minutes, ISO 800 @F4.6 and it was still way under exposed.
