just need some of your sage advice. I have a new ish Rel S8/12 sub (RRP is 2,7K), the question would be, do I get another one, OR spend 4/5 K on new speakers,, too replace my lovely Amphion Argon 3 LS powered by a new pair of PS M700 mono amps. I can ONLY afford to do one or the other

The only person who can decide is you. You have your ears tuned to using a sub .. so the only way to tell is to compare other speakers to yours and also to compare other sleakers using the sub with yours (using the sub).

One man's perfection can be another man's sonic disaster and only you can tell what is right for you.

Seek out local wammers and go and listen to theirs and widen your knowledge of what is out there to help with your decision making.

Agree with @uzzy here, ultimately the decision can only be yours, but if you need some guiding advice from us "great unwashed", can you tell us why you are feeling the need for a second sub? Is there a specific issue that you think it might help cure? Also don't forget to let us know what you love about your current setup - you don't want to throw the baby out with the bathwater

I have been told its the way forward, but deep down I tend to disagree (as I tend to do) back in the early days of subs, I believe one was enough, its just the current trend to have 2. I have the Amphions at the mo, and thats all I have had since getting back into this hobby 3 years ago, they produce a sound I am used to. I know I need to get to some demos etc, but the one thing holding me back a tad is a mobility issue, so have to be driven by my partner (and she is NOT into hi fi or music much, she puts up with it a bit) Am waiting for a local dealer to get some Dali Opticon 8's in

How well acoustically treated is the room? The most cost effective thing to do might be to install bass traps such as GIK Scopus T40s which I’ve found work well with my system with a pair of budget REL subs. The T40s are nominally tuned to 40hz but I’ve found they clean up the room modes down to at least 30hz.

Dalis are lovely things, with the correct positioning (as has been discussed a few times on here they are actually designed to be fired straight down the room rather than toed-in due to their dispersion characteristics). Not trying to put you off auditioning them, far from it, but I would say that you should probably have a think about what you would like to hear when you try them out, i.e. what improvements you might want over your current setup. Also as we all know, room acoustics play a big part in the ultimate sound you hear, so given that you are not so easily able to get out there, it sounds like the perfect reason to find a helpful dealer who can bring them to you at home to try out.

Of course if you are happy to chop & change for the sake of it, then there's no problem at all :) and that's a perfectly valid thing to do if it's what you want ("scratching an itch"? I've just done the same myself, although it's not gone well....)

I think there's folks on here that run two subs but also those that are quite happy with one. The main advantage I can think of with two, and I'm not speaking from experience here, just logic, is that if you have a difficult room acoustically then you can place the two subs and dial them in with appropriate settings to minimise room interactions and get an even frequency response, but I think it can be tricky to get the integration right between them both AND the main speakers. I'd probably say that REW should be your best friend with this (as well as a "trusted" pair of ears in the shape of a local friend who can assist)

New sub = less room in the house. More cables, more connections, more needing to tweak your bass.

Just do like I did: buy new speakers and be done

keep the sub , keep the speakers and get a better pre amp .. if you stuck this on the m700 i would be surprised if you were not shocked at the bass and improvement . tried it once and that was with a humble classic mfa !!

one chap i know sold his ps audio pre for a allegri which he felt was better and the mfa v2 is the top of its tree . the bespoke audio pre is not as good and sells for about 15k . these mfa v2 are superb . especially at 2.8k

I paid just tad more for that, so will be looking for around £1-1.1K. The pre I have is quite good, the next move would prob be the Directstream DAC, as I would like to keep the dac and pre in the same box

That's my view too. Subs have a place, but not really in 2 channel hi-fi. Leave them to the home theatre guys who want eathquake video sound to throw them off their chairs!

Subs add hugely to the complication of 2 channel music - as you say cables and floor space - but also they are much more difficult to get working seamlessly with their main speakers. Many users who don't have the patience or skills to do this critical job, resort to room correction DSP. And that has its own problems and cost.

As Ceko suggests, consider sell your existing speakers are look for a good pair of main speakers that are capable of providing the bass you need.

Those are seriously excellent speakers - I’ve heard them in a bunch of rooms, they are seriously bigger sounding than they look but in a very controlled way.
